Position Summary

Provides direct, independent, specialized respiratory care, pulmonary function testing, counseling and instruction to selected patients in a health care clinic; provides specialized pulmonary function testing and direct respiratory care to patients; performs equipment quality control, preventative maintenance, and limited repair; interviews and instructs patients to achieve adherence with pre-test instructions and assesses patients' related health care needs; administers medications and performs patient procedures; serves as an advocate and provides instruction and counseling to patients and their families; documents respiratory therapy actions in patient record in order to provide accurate medical records for future reference and accountability; maintains pulmonary functions laboratory medical records; reviews pulmonary laboratory results, initiates appropriate actions, and communicates results with patients/ physicians and others as appropriate; orders supplies and equipment in order to maintain appropriate inventory levels; maintains infection control standards for equipment and patient care; performs necessary related activities in order to maintain clinic operations; participates in interdisciplinary planning for meeting patient care and health service objectives; assists in setting and evaluating respiratory care and pulmonary function testing standards; assist in research activities; attends conferences, staff development programs and workshops; assist in developing protocols for carrying out health care provider orders; assists with maintenance of accurate database files for pulmonary function laboratory. 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired in the first two years of college such as an associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in respiratory therapy and pulmonary function testing; computer skills; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position also requires possession of a National Board for Respiratory Care credential in respiratory therapy at the advanced level and a sub-specialty in pulmonary diagnostics.

Desired Qualifications

Experience working with children and adult patients; experience with pulmonary function testing in an outpatient setting.

Summary of Health Risks

Duties associated with this position include: exposure to human blood, serum, tissue and other body fluids; and materials covered under Universal Precautions; TB risk or work within three feet of patients in a heath care setting; wear a respirator.
