Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Department of Applied Ecology integrates aspects of the broader fields of biology, ecology, genetics, toxicology, conservation and living resource management into a focused unit that employs novel approaches to confront local problems and global challenges. The department engages in highly collaborative research, education, and extension efforts that offer direct, practical solutions to current challenges in environmental and human well-being.
Essential Job Duties: The Research Assistant position will design and lead a variety of field and laboratory research in such areas as mollusk ecology, food web, nutrient and contaminant dynamics, water quality and pollution, and aquatic toxicology. The position will conduct data analysis and interpretation of the research, and present results. The position will set up and supervise the aquatic laboratory facilities and instrument maintenance. The position will guide students and other personnel in data collection, safe practices, and accepted protocols. The position will participation and provide leadership at all stages of the research process, including scientific writing and publication in the primary literature.
Minimum Education/Experience: * Post-Baccalaureate degree in an area of study related to the position, or a Bachelor's degree with 3 years of relevant experience. * Experience in any of the following areas: molluscan science, aquatic ecology, ecosystem processes, laboratory toxicity assessment methods, aquatic toxicology. * Completion of university courses in biology, ecology, toxicology, and statistics.
Department Required Skills: * Familiar with molluscan, ecological, and toxicological field and laboratory methods. * Ability to analyze and interpret research data and scientific writing for publication and oral presentations. * Ability to work in a collaborative team environment in the field, laboratory, and office.

Necessary Licenses and Certifications: * Must be in good physical health, able to carry over 50 lbs. * A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
