Academic Advisor - Reich College of Education
Primary Purpose: The Reich College of Education (RCOE) at Appalachian State University invites applicants for a full-time (twelve-month) Academic Advisor. The RCOE includes five departments enrolling approximately 2,400 students in its bachelor's, master's, education specialist and doctoral degree programs.
Services Provided: The Academic Advisor for Teacher Education provides will high quality individual and group advising to undergraduate students in their sophomore, junior, and senior years. The advisor will assume a caseload of students in education majors (i.e. secondary education, middle grades education, and elementary education). S/he will be an active leader and participant in assisting with orientation, registration, and planning events scheduled throughout the year. S/he will provide leadership and support for all retention efforts and advising strategies that support the success of students. One of the primary responsibilities of this position will also include assisting in with the development and management of a full-time advising center housed within the college.
Organizational and Principle Work Relationship: Principle work relationships include other RCOE advising staff and faculty, as well as dean’s office staff. The Academic Advisor will work with department chairs, faculty advisors, program directors, colleagues in comparable offices across campus, and other offices that provide academic support. The advisor will report to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Program Services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, a commitment to student success; the creation of and expansion and improvement upon the RCOE advising center; providing regular communication related to academic requirements, teacher education admission, academic planning, scheduling, policies and procedures; interpreting and explaining testing requirements; interpreting and explaining degree audits; providing active support and follow-up with students including those on academic probation; maintaining detailed records of advising meetings; providing additional counsel related to career interests and graduate school; collaborating with other advisors and program directors to improve student retention and outreach efforts; assisting with the development, revision, and updating of advising procedures including the use of technology; assisting in developing and maintaining a high quality advising webpage; participating in academic advising assessment and evaluation activities; assisting students with course selection and obtaining or granting special permissions for course enrollment when needed; monitoring academic progress; assisting students in academic difficulty with strategies for achieving academic success; developing and executing strategies that disseminate information about academic programs and policies to new and continuing students; making appropriate referrals as needed; and providing guidance to faculty and staff on student issues and advising policies. The advisor will meet with faculty, staff, students, and parents as needed and appropriate. The advisor will consult with, and speak on behalf of the academic programs regarding requirements and standards when needed.
Describe the Position’s Role in any University Committees: The Academic Advisor will serve on university committees as requested by the dean or associate deans.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Qualifications for the position include a Master’s degree from an accredited institution, preferable in student development, counseling, education, or a related field; prior experience advising students in a higher education setting; excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; strong organizational ability with attention to detail and accuracy; and proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other office technology.
Preferred Qualifications: Additional preferred qualifications include: at least two years’ experience working in an advising capacity in higher education; experience with SCT Banner Student System; working knowledge of computerized registration and degree audit systems; and experience interpreting and administering academic policies.
