Under general supervision, employee performs specific library work in Circulation and Reserves, overseeing the Circulation Desk. Employee does not normally work during Intersession (between semesters), Spring Break, during holiday periods, or other times when the library is not open, but opportunities to do so may occasionally arise. The successful applicant will work a minimum expected schedule of 6:45 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday mornings, with the possibility of schedule changes to accommodate holidays and intersession hours. Maximum 19 hours per week. May require night, afternoon, and weekend hours/shifts - open library hours (normally) 7:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday; 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., Fridays; 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., Saturdays; 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m., Sundays.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Primary responsibility for opening the library at 7:00 a.m. according to established procedures. Arrival will be at 6:45 a.m. to start systems, turn on lights, and prepare for service.
- Performs various Circulation Desk activities via both manual and automated systems (check-outs / check-ins / renewals)
- Performs resource-sharing (GIL Express, ILL, etc.) and course reserve collection activities (check-outs / check-ins; processing; scanning)
- Responds appropriately to library users' requests for information; provides referrals to other library or GGC staff/departments as needed
- Assists library users in locating circulating and reference materials using LC classification system
- Assists library users in locating periodical materials
- Assists library users in machine usage (self-checkout; copiers; microfilm/fiche reader/scanner)
- Accepts electronic payment for library fines/fees
- Shelves library materials as necessary and helps maintain orderly arrangement of collection
- Assists in the training and supervision of Student Assistants, especially at night and on the weekends; provides feedback on Student Assistant work performance for semester evaluations
- Works on special projects as assigned, using word processing, spreadsheet, database, scanning, or other computer software
- Performs other duties as assigned, including serving as back-up in the Information Commons

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications:
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Bachelor's degree required
- Facility with computer keyboard/mouse; experience with Windows operating system and Microsoft Office
- Ability to provide exemplary customer service and deal tactfully and courteously with a diversity of library users
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to become knowledgeable in basic library methods and techniques and execute basic library procedures
- Supervisory experience required
- Library experience preferred
- MLIS students preferred
Physical Requirements of the Job:
- Periods of standing, sitting, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, and carrying of light to moderate loads
- May require ability to move and shelve oversized or heavy books at times
- May require pushing carts filled with books or other library materials
- Extended periods of visual concentration
- Manual hand dexterity with hardware (keyboard / mouse)
- Hearing and spoken word abilities involved in interacting with library users in person and on the phone
- Job takes place in normal environmental conditions
