Research Assistant (Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory)
General Description of Position: The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is seeking applicants for a Research Assistant. This position is to develop and validate molecular diagnostic assays for the detection and differentiation of animal, zoonotic and foodborne pathogens. The position also provides diagnostic services using existing and newly developed molecular diagnostic assays.
The position requires an BS degree in Biology and related fields. The position requires knowledge and experience in molecular microbiology and preferably basic bioinformatics. Experience in molecular assay development is a plus. The main function of the position is to collect and analyze genome sequences of different pathogens, and identify conserved regions for the diagnostic assay design. He/she is also to work on the analytical sensitivity and specificity of the designed assay by testing the assay on positive control templates, and to optimize the assay conditions to reach best possible sensitivity and specificity. Diversity and Inclusion: Kansas State University embraces diversity, and promotes inclusion in every sector of the institution. The university established the Office of Diversity, led by the associate vice provost for diversity and a dedicated staff. Additionally, each college has a designated Diversity Point Person to provide insight and guidance.
Kansas State University received the prestigious Higher Education Excellence in Diversity, or HEED, award from Insight Into Diversity magazine for the past three years. Multicultural students account for 15 percent of our student population, a university record and continuing trend.Job Description: - Genomic sequence collection and analysis for targeted pathogens. Design primers to detect and differentiate different genotypes and serotypes of targeted pathogens. Analytical assessment of sensitivity and specificity of designed primers in multiplexed conditions.
