Professional Research Assistant

Job Summary:

Working under the supervision of the PI and collaborating PI's, the Research Assistant will be responsible for research activities in a trauma/general surgery laboratory and involves laboratory organization, carrying out independent research projects as well assisting fellows and students and performance of experiments. The research focuses on perturbations in coagulation after trauma, inflammatory biology and complex systems approaches to coagulation and trauma. The Research Assistant will prepare specimens and preform functional assays on human and animal samples. In addition he/she will perform a broad array of molecular, cell and animal work related to coagulation and inflammatory perturbations after injury.

In addition to direct research work, he/she will ensure that the assigned lab work is performed effectively and efficiently on a daily basis. The Research Assistant will monitor all quality control logs and other relevant documentation and will also assist in the overall running of the Cohen lab including purchasing, invoicing, record keeping and servicing of lab equipment, staff and data. He/ she will also ensure that staff members working in the lab have an understanding of the laboratory practices as they relate to the clinical research process. The Research Assistant will work with animals in the vivarium, as well as different specimens, such as blood and tissue samples.

Tools used by Research Assistants include functional coagulation analyzers, standard cell and molecular equipment, microscopes, advanced computers and other lab equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in development of research protocols and procedures.
  • Perform molecular, cellular and animal experiments.
  • Preform functional coagulation analysis utilizing robotic coagulation analysis equipment.
  • Validate quality of data elements/data editing, Test, verify and analyze research data.
  • Assist in the overall running of the Cohen lab including purchasing, invoicing, record keeping and servicing of lab equipment, staff and data
  • Diagnose and solve system/software problems, install applications software as related to research needs.
  • Diagnose and problem solve as it relates to the research project
  • Conduct screens and assays
  • Conduct literature searches
  • Preparation of tissues, cell cultures, blood samples, etc. for testing
  • Training of laboratory personnel in experimentation techniques
  • Animal care related to research procedures
  • Prepare research manuscripts and research presentations.
  • Develop and maintain research database.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Previous experience with molecular and cell biology laboratory techniques and equipment. Previous experience or training in basic science laboratory work and/or in clinical research studies
  • Good communication skills (interpersonal, written, verbal)
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Good time management skills
  • Minimum Bachelor of Science
