Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

When supervising trainees, an attending anesthesiologist meets the following conditions to demonstrate sufficient personal and identifiable medical services to the patient to exercise full, personal control over the management of anesthetic care. The Medical Director of Pre-Procedure Services/attending anesthesiologist must as a minimum:

  • Manage staff of the Pre-Procedure Services Unit, responsible for performance planning, evaluation, and disciplinary action if necessary.
  • Be fiscally and operationally responsible for the success of the unit.

  • Be present and ready to perform any service performed by an attending physician in a non-teaching setting.
  • Be recognized by the patient as his personal physician.

The attending anesthesiologist may be required to perform these services in the operating room, in the labor and delivery area, in radiology, and in some special procedure areas. Attending anesthesiologists as faculty members are also expected to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the specialty by way of clinical or laboratory research.

All attending anesthesiologists must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado.
