CIRES/ PSD Professional Research Assistant
Computer Scientist for Data Assimilation Dataset Development

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) in Boulder, Colorado is seeking a professional research assistant with significant experience running weather forecast models and/or data assimilation systems. The candidate will work with scientists in the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory/Physical Sciences Division (PSD). The candidate will have several responsibilities related to the production of a new NOAA global atmospheric reanalysis data set. This position will be located in Boulder, Colorado.

Job responsibilities:

(1) Develop and modify scripts that control the cycled work flow that produces multiple decades of retrospective gridded analyses of the atmospheric state. These are produced by cycling operational NOAA weather forecast models and data assimilation schemes.
(2) Monitor the progress of the cycled production; diagnose and fix problems.
(3) Archive the analysis and observational data in a manner that permits ready access by potential users. Monitor the archive to make sure that there is no missing data.
(4) Work with other scientists to incorporate improvements to the underlying data assimilation methodologies.

The applicant will be expected to work with PSD, NOAA, and other agency staff in a team environment. She/he will also work with PSD staff to document and present the results in the form of journal articles, seminars, and conference presentations.

Pending the job performance and capabilities, the applicant may lead the overall team activity in developing and producing a next-generation global reanalysis data set.

Qualifications

Requirements

Technical qualifications include a B.S. or M.S degree in computer science, atmospheric science, or related discipline, and at least two years experience running weather forecast models and/or data assimilation methods on supercomputers. Experience with ensemble-based data assimilation methods is desirable but not essential. The applicant should have demonstrated experience developing structured code in Fortran90, C, python, and/or UNIX scripting. Experience with OpenMP and MPI is desirable.

The applicant should be able to speak and write English well. The candidate will be expected to be able to both work independently and in a team environment. Some travel may be required, at the level of 1-2 trips/year.
