Post-Doctoral Fellow - HIV immunology/microbiology. This full time (100%FTE) Post-doctoral Fellow position is open immediately in the Divisions of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in the School of Medicine at the University of Colorado. The Palmer laboratory is looking for a bright and enthusiastic individual interested in advancing their career by taking this key position to perform cutting edge research in this highly collaborative and fun laboratory. The laboratory is studying the role of the gut microbiome in HIV disease pathogenesis and HIV-associated comorbidities. Our ongoing studies have demonstrated that HIV infection is associated with dramatic alterations in the microbial composition in the gut. The laboratory has NIH funding to examine the relationship between HIV-associated alteration in gut microbiota and metabolic disease as well as how changes in gut microbiota affect other parameters of gut health and local and systemic inflammation. We are also studying the effects of dietary intervention on HIV-infected individuals in Colorado and examining fecal microbiota in HIV-infected subjects in rural and urban Zimbabwe to determine the relationship between fecal microbiome composition, diet, and inflammatory/metabolic disease markers. Specifically, the Post-doc will investigate how immunologic changes associated with HIV infection drive alterations in the gut microbiome and the role of these alterations in the development of metabolic disease and increased inflammation seen in HIV-infected individuals.
Examples of Work Performed
1) The use basic in vitro cellular immunology approaches (i.e. flow cytometry, CyTOF, cytokine bead array assays, etc ) to examine immune responses primary cells isolated from blood, tissue to characterize immune responses to bacteria and viruses.
2) Perform microbiome and RNAseq studies.
3) Train students and other staff as needed, attend and present in laboratory meeting and national and international conferences, write and edit scientific publications.
The successful candidate will also have experience with the following techniques:
Flow cytometry and CyTOF for in depth phenotyping of primary cells
Isolation of gut cells from human specimens and primary cell culture
T regulatory cell generation and functional analysis
Examination of antigen-specific T cells using intracellular cytokine staining
Development of KO strains of bacteria
Development of qPCR assays for quantification of various bacterial genes
The applicant will utilize a variety of procedures in this position, including but not limited to techniques in immunology, microbiology (microbiome), and molecular biology.

Position will report directly to Principal Investigator, Brent Palmer Ph.D., Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the ACI/ID Flow Cytometry Facility.
Position will supervise all Professional Research Assistants (PRAs). Will assign tasks, monitor progress and work flow, check the product for timeliness and correctness or soundness.

- Highly inquisitive, a high degree of self-motivation, and a specific career interest in the areas of HIV immunology, microbiome and clinical/translational research.
- Proficiency in data acquisition, data recording with precision, and statistical analysis.
- Proficiency in planning, organizing and supervising large-scale experiments.
- Proficiency with cellular immunology based techniquesm
- Proficient working with human blood and tissue samples in BL2+ setting.
- Knowledge of HIV immunology.
- Proficiency in managing all data for manuscripts, meetings and grant renewals.
- Strong ability to design, implement, analyze and report data.
- Ability to write manuscripts and aid in the preparation of grant applications.
- Interface and communicate effectively with other lab members.
- Proficiency in maintaining quality control of laboratory procedures.
• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a PhD/MD in one of these fields of study; Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Infectious Diseases.
• Minimum of 5 year(s) experience in one or more of the above fields.
• Excellent communication skills using the English language.
• The ability to work independently within the research lab on basic HIV immunology and/or microbiology.
• Need to be compliant with basic word processing, spreadsheet, statistics programs, flow cytometry analysis programs.
Desired or preferred:
• Ph.D. or M.D. or equivalent.
• Proven experience (strong publication record) with basic immunologic techniques.
