Position Summary

The Department of Peace and Conflict Studies (PCS) at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) seeks an accomplished and visionary faculty member who is willing to serve in leadership positions within the department, and whose scholarship, teaching, and community engagement complements our undergraduate and graduate programs focused on conflict transformation to build peaceful and just social systems within interpersonal, interorganizational, and international contexts.

The candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with current faculty to enhance the residential and online academic programs and advance disciplinary and interdisciplinary scholarship, to teach courses and pursue research in areas related to her or his areas of specialization, and to mentor and support the Department's faculty members' scholarship. A successful candidate must be willing to lead the development and growth of initiatives that enact the mission of the department to help address the "wicked problems" of our times which require not only interdisciplinary theory and practice, or praxis, but also a deep understanding of the role of engaging with diverse stakeholders to build and sustain healthy relationships and vibrant communities. These initiatives are expected to leverage synergies among teaching, scholarship, and community engagement.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES of this position include:

  • Expanding PCS's capacity to offer relevant, timely, strategic, and sustainably-funded educational programs in areas related to conflict resolution and conflict transformation;
  • Engaging in visionary team leadership and guidance for the PCS Department as it moves into an important growth phase;
  • Developing and teaching courses, seminars, colloquia, and workshops;
  • Conducting and disseminating high quality scholarship; and
  • Actively participating in, as well as leading, educational programs, strategic partnerships, interdisciplinary scholarship, and community engagement activities.

Located within the School of Health and Human Sciences (HHS) and transformed from an academic program into a department in 2013, PCS is uniquely situated for interdisciplinary and cross-sector partnerships and community engagement. UNCG is a High Research Activity, Community Engagement, Minority Serving Institution located in a metropolitan area of over 1.6 million in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, 2-3 hours drive from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian mountains. We are just over an hour drive from major metropolitan areas, including the Research Triangle and Charlotte. Greensboro is a special place for conflict transformation and peacebuilding as it is the birthplace of the Civil Rights Sit-In Movement, the home of the Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the International Civil Rights Center and Museum. As a Federally-designated refugee resettlement site, over 120 languages are spoken in Guilford County schools. UNCG is member to a vibrant academic community with over a dozen higher education institutions within a two hour drive from campus, including six within Greensboro alone.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate in peace and conflict studies (preferred), or a related field with strong connections to the works of conflict transformation
  • Core theoretical and practice-oriented expertise in conflict resolution and conflict transformation with particular expertise in mediation, facilitation, alternative forms of dispute resolution, restorative justice, community dialogue, conflict systems design, and/or community-engaged praxis
  • Proven competencies in collaboration, strategic thinking, community-university partnerships, and effective leadership
  • Dedication to and experience with practice-focused, theory-informed, educational programs that reach a broad range of learners through in-person and online platforms


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing collaborative initiatives across disciplines, organizations, and communities to promote and sustain healthy, safe, and vibrant communities
  • Experience designing and delivering professional development opportunities for different sectors through collaborative partnerships
  • Experience securing the resources necessary to support and sustain the continued growth of scholarship, education, and community engagement with diverse populations and stakeholders
  • Successful track record of mentoring and supporting the scholarly work of faculty colleagues and students
