Fayetteville State University is a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina and the second oldest public institution of higher education in the state. Founded in 1867 as the Howard School for the education of African Americans, today FSU serves a growing student body of approximately 6,000 and ranks among the nation’s most diverse campus communities.

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The Department of Psychology, located in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at Fayetteville State University, offers the Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a minor in Psychology. The Department also offers an on-line degree completion program and a minor in Psychology. Additionally, the Department offers the Master of Arts with two tracks: counseling psychology and experimental psychology. The Department places significant emphasis on advisement and mentoring to prepare students who graduate for employment in the social and behavioral sciences and for graduate and professional studies.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The Department Chair serves as the chief representative of the department, the leader of the department in its internal affairs, and the liaison between the departmental faculty and the university administration. The Chair is the administrative and instructional leader of the department. The duties of the Chair involves collaboration and interaction with faculty, staff, students, and other administrators.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and he/she is a member of the CAS leadership team. The duties of the Chair are instructional and administrative. The specific duties and responsibilities of the Chair include:
1. Provide visionary leadership and strategic vision to advance the Department.
2. Recruit, supervise, mentor, and evaluate faculty.
3. Recruit students and promote the growth of both the undergraduate and graduate certificate programs.
4. Provide leadership in working with nontraditional students.
5. Manage department budget and resources.
6. Continue to develop a large, successful, and diverse faculty and staff and foster a collaborative and collegial work environment.
7. Guide curriculum development.
8. Provide leadership to expand the online program.
9. Identify and seek external funds to the department.
10. Promote the department within the university and to the wider community in Fayetteville and Fort Bragg.
11. Provide leadership to complete the annual assessment of program and student learning outcomes.
