Scope of Responsibilities As a member of the Student Life team, the Associate Director provides the vision and leadership for the Center for Leadership Development and Social Action (LDSA) in the comprehensive design and implementation of leadership and service initiatives. Partner with key constituents to facilitate the implementation of the Duke Leadership Framework and high impact practices. Oversee the execution and signing of University contracts, supervise and train staff in contract negotiation, and serve as a liaison to the Division of Student Affairs departments. Create, enforce, and implement policy and procedural initiatives to insure safe practices in risk management for students and their activities. Engage collaboratively and partner with key stakeholders within the Duke University and Durham communities to support the ever changing and diverse student population.
Duties % of Effort
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Center for Leadership Development and Social Action and oversight of large- scale leadership initiatives, including but not limited to, Leadership@Duke collaborations, Duke Partnership for Service, the Penny PilgrimGeorge Women's Leadership Initiative, Duke Leadership and Service Awards, LeaderShape, Duke Launch and Alternative Breaks. Develop and facilitate leadership and service workshops, seminars and retreats connected to the Duke University Leadership Framework. Work closely with Student Involvement, Event Management and Corporate Risk Management to insure leadership events are planned, implemented, and executed with an awareness of and attention to risk and liability. 25
- Initiate and develop key collaborative relationships across the Division of Student Affairs and within the University and Durham community. Lead efforts to expand the Leadership@Duke opportunities for students, staff and faculty. Assist students in creating meaningful partnerships and relationships with other students, staff and the Durham community through reciprocal participation in programs and events. Partner with the Duke Alumni Association to build a network of Alumni to participate in on-campus and community programs as well as immersion experiences. Develop a leadership alumni database of past participants. 20
- Supervise, train, and evaluate two full-time staff members and three graduate students to ensure that effective performance reviews are conducted with all full-time staff. Direct all efforts in staff recruitment, development, and retention, ensuring compliance with University and Division policies and human resource strategies. 20
- Oversee the LDSA budget and manage appropriate expenditures including a grant and endowments. Provide guidance to assistant director and student development coordinator in maintaining fiscal responsibilities, and effectively utilize funding from multiple sources to enhance leadership development and service programming and travel. Prepare reports, proposals, and provide recommendations related to strategic planning, program assessment, and student development. 15
- Partner with the Office of Assessment and Research to develop and implement an annual assessment plan and develop long-term programmatic goals for the Division of Student Affairs. Responsible for conducting relevant assessment initiatives that advance both the work of LDSA and other Division of Student Affairs offices in alignment with the Division of Student Affairs vision and mission. 10
- Serve on short term and long-term University committees, lead search committees, attend professional development workshops, role model collaboration and build positive relationships both internal and external to Student Affairs. 10
Education: Master's degree required in Higher Education, Student Affairs or related field of study.
Experience: Work generally requires a minimum of four years of experience in student activities, advising, student organizational support, and program planning at the undergraduate and/or graduate level with progressive levels of responsibilities. Prior experience managing full-time and student employees required. # Knowledge: Must be familiar with current leadership theory and high impact practices.
