Under the direction of the Director of Education Abroad, the Associate Director is charged with managing the office operations and academic services for the unit. The Associate Director will lead a team of education abroad advisors to provide high quality support for students through all phases of the study abroad experience. The position has both administrative and supervisory responsibilities and will play a key role in strategically growing study abroad at the University of Connecticut.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Directs the day-to-day operations and advising staff of Education Abroad, in accordance with program goals and objective; oversees program coordination and logistics; prepares necessary reports; resolves problems and makes changes to accommodate changing priorities and needs.
  2. Selects, trains, supervises and evaluates professional and student staff; recommends staffing needs; determines work assignments and work schedules to most effectively meet program needs.
  3. Leads the advising team by creating a strategy for delivering high quality advising, including how advising is approached and delivered, setting expectations and goals.
  4. Provides regular performance feedback to staff and works to create a strong collaborative environment that makes quality service to students its top priority.
  5. Develops initiatives/best practices to ensure efficiencies in office operations.
  6. Works with advising staff, administrative staff and overseas partners to provide support for students throughout the study abroad experience that are in line with best practices in the field.
  7. Manages major student issues encountered during the study abroad process and ensures issues are resolved in a timely way, using excellent judgement.
  8. Manages the credit and grade process for all study abroad students, including handling issues with course equivalencies, training faculty evaluators, and benchmarking credit and grade equivalencies.
  9. Responsible for working with various administrative and academic offices on campus to provide student support and assistance as related to education abroad.
  10. Supervise the Incoming Exchange Coordinator, oversee the exchange program, communicate with exchange partners as necessary and manage issues related to incoming students.
  11. In collaboration with the Director, manage the operations of faculty-led program planning and preparation. Work with the Director to develop and continuously improve materials and processes to meet education abroad health, safety and risk management standards. Provide health and safety training for all faculty and staff leading programs abroad. Maintain emergency information for UConn-administered programs.
  12. Works closely with the Education Abroad Director to understand the business needs and practices of the university, ensuring smooth business operations for programs and helping assess and ensure program viability.
  13. Works with the Education Abroad Director on short and long-term strategic initiatives that increase the visibility of the Education Abroad Office on campus and significantly increase the number of students who study abroad.
  14. Serves on the Crisis Response Team and works with the Director of Education Abroad on best practices, protocol and assessment of crisis response plan.
  15. Provides excellent advising and support to students on a select portfolio of countries.
  16. Serves on the Study Abroad Advisory Committee and works with Director to bring issues to the committee for review
  17. Serves as a resource to students, staff and others on matters relating to program policies, procedures and activities.
  18. Maintains a professional presence, stays current in the field, and participates as needed in national study abroad meetings and regional conferences.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's Degree in international studies, psychology, business, counseling, education or related field.
  2. Minimum of four years of experience in the field of international education including advising responsibilities with demonstrated ability to supervise.
  3. Good administrative and organizational skills, including ability to identify and resolve administrative problems.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  5. Proven ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, parents, administrators as well as external agencies/groups and the public.
  6. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Master's Degree in international studies, psychology, business, counseling, education or related field.
  2. Familiar with complex concepts, practices and procedures within study abroad.
  3. Foreign language proficiency and overseas work or living experience.
  4. Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in dealing with sensitive matters.
  5. Experience with Terra Dotta Software and People Soft.
  6. Expert knowledge of study abroad program models and best practices in the field
