Duties of a Graduate Medical Education Director/Assistant DIO may include the following but are not limited to:


The GME Director/Assistant DIO for Patient Safety will work with the Vice Dean/Designated Institutional Official to:


Oversee patient safety and quality improvement activities and education for residents

  • Compile, develop, and implement a uniform baseline Patient Safety and Quality Improvement curriculum for all programs
  • Develop and maintain a database of training program patient safety and quality improvement programs
  • Facilitate projects being worked on by the Patient Safety Resident committee; help guide residents in structure and implementation of these projects; track and monitor outcomes of resident projects
  • Promote use of SB Safe system for reporting of adverse or near-miss patient safety events
  • Alignment (where possible) of resident and hospital patient safety efforts.
  • Analysis of resident-related clinical quality and patient safety data
Disseminate policy and regulatory information for residents and faculty
  • Oversight and monitoring of adherence to GMEC policies and SBUH policies
  • Maintenance of current knowledge regarding ACGME, ECFMG, specialty board, and NYS DOH policies, rules, and regulations related to resident education
  • Back-up to DIO as institutional resource for knowledge and policy of GME program activities (compliance, NRMP, GME Committee)
  • Plan and participate in program, faculty, coordinator, and resident institution-wide educational programs
  • Maintain membership and participate in regional and national GME organizations and meetings
Provide backup and assistance to the DIO for

  • Analysis of data from ACGME and internal resident and faculty surveys
  • Coordination and analysis of program dashboard data related to program performance and annual program reviews
  • Coordination with SBUH compliance related to physician staff for residents
  • Assistance with preparation, planning, and implantation of efforts regarding CLER visits and for ACGME program visits
  • Investigation and counseling regarding resident-related SB Safe and other patient-related adverse reports
  • Assist in strategic planning for GME office regarding entirety of SB GME efforts, including new programs, sponsored programs at affiliated hospitals, and ongoing SBUH programs

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree. Clinical background. Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a hospital setting in GME, or in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, or related area. Record of accomplishment overseeing projects from inception to conclusion. Experience working with residents. Excellent communication skills, organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree or Doctorate (MD, PhD, DNP, or advanced certificate program) in a clinical, educational, or health-related field. 5+ years’ experience in a tertiary academic center. Understanding of regulations and rules pertaining to residency training from ACGME, Department of Health, and other regulatory agencies.
