The Duke Global Digital Health Science Center seeks to hire a full-time CLINICAL RESEARCH SPECIALIST, SR for the center. The CRS will initially work on two weight-management intervention studies. One study is conducted among adults receiving medical care at community health centers in central North Carolina. The other study is conducted among adults in Durham and surrounding areas who are interested in a text message-based weight loss program. Both interventions include telephone-based support to men and women with obesity to help them make healthy changes in diet, exercise and lifestyle. The CRS will be responsible for participant recruitment, retention, survey administration, data collection activities and management of data. The position may involve local travel to participating health centers in NC. Specific training will be provided.

Work Performed
  • Identify potential study participants via multiple methods (putting up flyers, managing social media ads, approaching participants in health centers, etc.)
  • Recruit study participants and schedule initial and follow-up visits over the phone or at the study offices in Durham, NC
  • Package and ship study materials to participants
  • Collect physical measurements (weight, height, blood pressure)
  • Administer surveys and monetary incentives to study participants
  • Manage materials and equipment associated with data collection; troubleshoot equipment issues with participants, as needed
  • Serve as a liaison between participating community health centers and project staff at the Duke Global Digital Health Science Center
  • Maintain required documentation and adhere to project deadlines
  • Adherence to protocols and completion of tasks within set deadlines is required
  • Assist project staff in developing study protocols


Education & Experience
  • BA/BS required
  • Research experience preferred, particularly in the fields of public health, behavioral science, or nutrition
  • Previous experience working with electronic medical record systems preferred


Key Skills
  • As one of the primary contacts for study participants, the CRS must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, via the telephone and in-person, as well as a high level of comfort taking physical measurements
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and an ability to multitask are essential to the position
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • CRS must be able to manage data, as well as to communicate barriers and deviations from protocol in a timely fashion
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends
  • High level of comfort and demonstrated competence with technology
  • Spanish fluency is preferred, but not required
