The Biology Department in the Eberly College of Arts & Sciences at West Virginia University is seeking applications for an Academic Lab Manager II. This position is responsible for supervising and overseeing general operational activities for the non-majors biology (BIOL 103 and 104) laboratories.

In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will: 
•Order supplies and equipment for students to complete laboratory activities from local vendors and pick them up.
•Collect and maintain healthy breeding stock cultures, mainly of bacterial nature.
•Maintain laboratory equipment, including but not limited to, autoclave, water baths, incubators, gel electrophoresis, and LabQuest units.
•Schedule and coordinate routine maintenance on equipment such as microscopes and spectrophotometers annually.
•Maintain clean and safe work surfaces in all teaching labs and prep rooms, including cleaning and sterilizing glassware, instruments and other materials.
•Supervise, train and provide support for approximately 15-22 graduate teaching assistants per semester in lab procedures to teach non-major biology laboratories.
•Review objectives of laboratory work and instruction and its relevance to the concepts illustrated by instruction of experiments.
•Assist the Teaching Associate Professor with the design and development of the laboratory manual, which will include preparing written instructions (and pictures when necessary) for new laboratory experiments and activities.

Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Pay Grade: 16

Qualifications
 

•Bachelor's degree in biology, life sciences or related field required
•One (1) year of experience in the following:
◦Laboratory experience in ecology/evolutionary/cell, molecular, and animal and plant physiology based laboratories
◦Experience working with laboratory and safety issues

•Six (6) months of supervisory experience
•Demonstrated experience in methodology commonly used in higher education biology teaching laboratories
•Demonstrated excellent background in biology and good knowledge of chemistry
•Demonstrated ability to mix reagents, solutions and buffers for use in experiments in the experiments in the teaching facilities
•Demonstrated ability of proper chemical storage, handling and removal, and knowledge of lab safety procedures

•Ability to teach laboratory sections in the laboratory facilities in the absence of the graduate teaching assistant due to emergency or illness, therefore skills in student instruction are necessary
