Job Summary: This is an intermediate-level Veterinary Technician position providing technical support to the Veterinary Services Unit in the Animal Services Division of the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) located at UW-Madison. The incumbent assists WNPRC Veterinary staff in performing a wide range of duties relating to the care of nonhuman primates at the WNPRC. In addition to the responsibilities of the Veterinary Technician 1 classification, the responsibilities for this classification include minor non-invasive surgical techniques (soft tissue biopsies, multiple layer or complex suturing) and assisting the surgeon in major clinical surgeries and advanced dentistry procedures such as major or minor extractions. Provide back up for other veterinarian technicians in times of high case flow or absence. Provide training, assistance and instruction to new members of the veterinary staff, researchers, and members of the research community who are requesting orientation to primate use and handling. The position will also require the technician to interact with investigators on a daily basis to coordinate clinical needs of the animals with the research needs to provide optimal outcomes for both.



Requirements: - Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks.
-Physical ability to lift, sit, stand, bend, reach, squat, twist and push to safely handle and care for the nonhuman primates.
- Must be TB negative.
- Applicant will be required to provide proof of immunization for measles or have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, applicant may need to be immunized.
- Allergies to animals must be controlled by medication.
- Must possess a valid driver's license that meets standards of UW Risk Management in order to operate WNPRC vehicles.
-Incumbent may be assigned to work at the WNPRC's central location on campus or either of two satellite facilities in Blue Mounds or at the WIMR (Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research, near UW Hospital).
- Certification by the state of Wisconsin as a Clinical Veterinary Technician preferred but not required.



Schedule Comment: Monday-Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm
Occassional night and weekend work hours may be required
Must be willing to work on-call and weekend hours

The possibility exists that schedule may transition to Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday.
