JOB PURPOSE:Direct and manage the strategy development for stewardship plans for the School of Humanities and Sciences. Responsible for leading the success of the department's overall stewardship goals.
H&S INFO:H&S is Stanford's largest school, with 23 departments and 23 interdisciplinary programs spanning the core of humanities, arts, languages and literatures, social sciences, mathematics, and physical and life sciences.
Reporting to the Director of Public Relations in H&S, the Director of Stewardship works closely with internal and external constituencies to ensure that donors understand the impact of their support of the school through financial and narrative reports, correspondence, events, and recognition. The Director will lead a team to meet or exceed the university's minimum stewardship standards for nearly 1,000 active funds in the school, including endowed professorships, graduate fellowships, endowed and expendable program funds, discretionary funds, and building funds.
The Director also serves as stewardship liaison to H&S and university development staff, including the H&S Associate Dean of External Relations, the H&S Dean's Office, H&S department and program chairs and administrators, H&S gift officers, the university's major gift officers, and the university's central stewardship team.
*CORE DUTIES:Manage overall operations of the stewardship function for H&S's External Relations team, including reporting, tracking, acknowledgments, events, production of collateral material, auditing of funds, and project management.
Manage 3-4 stewardship staff members by providing training, guidance, and leadership. Collaboratively develop the team's priorities and enhance effectiveness.
Design and implement strategy for creative, consistent, efficient, and donor-centric reporting, acknowledgment, and recognition programs. Ensure that H&S donors receive comprehensive and timely reporting in accordance with the university's stewardship standards.
Research, draft, and edit accurate and compelling donor correspondence, communications pieces and narrative reports, and generate new ideas and strategies to enhance stewardship programs.
Oversee timely, accurate, and meaningful acknowledgement of gifts.
Develop relationships and maintain open communications with colleagues across campus as well as with donors.
Identify leads and prospects for the school's fundraising priorities and communicate to development officers.
In partnership with senior leaders and development officers, develop and implement a comprehensive, enhanced, and coordinated reporting program for the school's top donors. Coordinate with university's central program.

Education & Experience:Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Exceptional verbal, writing, research, and editorial skills, preferably demonstrated in an academic setting; ability to find relevant information and synthesize to compose clear and effective prose
Superior organizational skills; a work style that is thorough, accurate, and detail-oriented; the ability to plan and follow through on projects
Strong customer-service focus; excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a proven ability to work patiently, persuasively, and effectively with a wide variety of people, including students, faculty, staff, donors, and alumni
Demonstrated project management skills, including experience in leading project teams and ability to simultaneously coordinate and manage multiple complex tasks with competing deadlines; set priorities and schedules and meet deadlines
Demonstrated sound judgment in situations requiring independent decision-making and in handling confidential and sensitive material
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Sought Include:Excellent computer skills; proficiency in using word processing, database applications, web resources, and finance systems (experience using Stanford's information systems such as PostGrads is a plus)
Ability to manipulate and analyze data in spreadsheets using Excel
An understanding of the entire development enterprise—particularly within an academic setting—and the ability to work within that framework desirable
Ability to understand and articulate how stewardship supports and advances the broader fundraising agenda
Experience or interest in the humanities, natural sciences, and/or social sciences preferred; Advanced degree preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, stand/walk, sit, use a telephone.
  • Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.
