Stanford's shared nanofacilities offer a comprehensive array of advanced nanofabrication and nanocharacterization tools. Over 1,000 researchers make use of the shared facilities each year in order to further their research programs. The goal of the shared facilities at Stanford University is to provide open, cost-effective access to state-of-the-art nanofabrication and nanocharacterization facilities for scientists and engineers from academia, small and large companies, and government laboratories. The Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) Laboratory Manager will work to direct the coordination of multiple scanning probe instruments across the Stanford Nano Shared Facilities (SNSF) and the Stanford Nanofabrication Facility (SNF). The set of tools currently includes four Atomic Force Microscopes (AFMs) as well as three SPMs with Raman spectroscopy capabilities. The successful candidate will manage the day-to-day operations, and maintenance of the instruments. He/She will provide training and support to researchers, develop and implement advanced techniques, such as Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS). He/She must maintain symbiotic relationships with other user facilities that also offer scanning probe instruments, including the School of Medicine, while also expanding to include state-of-the-art techniques that differ from those available elsewhere at Stanford University. The SPM Laboratory Manager reports to the Associate Director of the Stanford Nano Shared Facilities. The current SPM lab features a Park Systems NX-10, XE-70 and XE-100, a WITec Alpha 500 Raman, a AIST-NT with Horiba LabRAM Raman spectrometer as well as an Asylum Research AFM. - Support complex scientific and research programs related to a broad range of SPM techniques, including Raman Spectroscopy; analyze data, monitor and oversee experimental processes.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, or senior administrative officers to oversee and conduct complex non-routine analyses, select optimum solutions, and perform corrective modifications to equipment and system designs.
- Carry out all activities, including troubleshooting and resolving routine problems for scientist or engineers, independently.
- Participate in the planning, design, and implementation of scientific or engineering initiatives, and work toward project objective.
- Oversee the SPM laboratory space, and possibly supervise the work of others associated with the group.
- Serve as a resource in review of research proposals and research capabilities, and make recommendations.
- Acquaint the Stanford community with the capabilities.
- Establish, communicate, and enforce compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
- Develop training manuals and safety guidelines, and train new instrumentation users, researchers, and/or technical staff.
- Stay current with and, as needed, contribute to developing new technologies, techniques, and analytical capabilities in the fields of AFM and Raman.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or related field, and five or more years of relevant experience in area of Scanning Probe Microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree highly desired.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills of advanced scientific or engineering principles and practices.
- Extensive experience applying complex scientific and engineering principles and performing special technical services involving both development and performance.
- Ability to collaborate with senior engineering and scientific staff to design and develop special purpose equipment and/or systems.
- Experience overseeing the plan, design, and implementation of major scientific or engineering initiatives and ensuring project objective are met.
- Demonstrated ability to review research proposals, evaluate research capabilities, and make recommendations.
- Demonstrated ability to establish, communicate, and enforce compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
- Experience overseeing a laboratory space or unit and supervising the work of technicians and other staff associated with the group.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and train a diverse work staff.
- Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
- Occasionally stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.
- Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
- May be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers unusual work hours or routine overtime.
