Description of Responsibilities: The Director of the Office of Learning Services will report to the Associate Provost for Undergraduate and Special Programs. Duties and responsibilities include:
- Develop and secure approval of annual goals and operating plans; oversee implementation; report on and assess outcomes
- Hire, train, supervise, and develop a diverse professional staff
- Communicate effectively and accurately with others in a timely fashion; manage interpersonal situations with tact, diplomacy and discretion
- Manage departmental budget; secure funding for additional initiatives and programs; manage student scheduling and payroll records
- Comply with and enforce institutional policies, procedures, and directives
- Collaborate with SUNY Oswego faculty, professional staff, administration, and program directors to achieve OLS and institutional goals
- Implement the institution’s assessment plan to evaluate effectiveness and identify areas for improvement
- Represent the Office of Learning Services (OLS) on campus committees specific to academic support services such as Enrollment Management, Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), and Success in Undergraduate Mathematical Sciences (SUMS) grant
- Stay current with trends in developmental education and learning assistance programs; support new initiatives specific to increasing access of services and student retention
- Oversee the hiring and supervision of diverse student employees such as tutors, desk attendants, and graduate assistants
- Maintain external contracts such as TutorTrac and STAR-NY
- Supervise the maintenance and delivery of EDU 101, 104 and GST 308
- Develop and conduct presentations for diverse audiences
In addition, the director will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate education, and possess communication, organizational and interpersonal skills needed to work effectively with a diverse array of students and colleagues.
- Master’s degree
- 3 years’ minimum experience in the learning and academic services area
- 2 years’ experience managing staff and leading a department
- Experience in planning and implementing training programs
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse populations
- Demonstrated ability to train, evaluate and support the growth of staff and student employees
- Demonstrated history of successful budget management
- Experience gathering evidence of program effectiveness and using data for continuous improvement
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills and task management experience
- Ability to effectively partner with the campus community at all levels of the organization
- Proven ability to secure funding through grants and other sources
- Experience with academic support programs that foster student success
- 5 years’ experience in the learning and academic services area
- Experience in evaluating processes, programs and personnel
- Experience planning and implementing tutor training programs
- Experience with online tutoring
- Familiarity with College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) and National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) standards

Description of Department: The Office of Learning Services (OLS) offers free academic tutoring services to all enrolled students at SUNY Oswego. Our two centers provide walk-in and appointment-based tutoring primarily at the 100-200 level, and selected upper division courses. In addition to tutoring, OLS offers a weekly workshop series in math (“Math Talks”) and writing (“Write Ways”) open to the SUNY Oswego community.
The Student Academic Success Specialists, also housed in OLS, provide best-practice academic success advisement by fostering students' ability to grow and achieve academic and personal goals that lead to future success. The Success Specialists offer “Success Workshops” open to the college community and designed to provide academic skills support in areas such as test anxiety, priority management, note taking, and effective reading.
