Michael Atiyah Chair in Mathematical Sciences and Director of CAMS

Beirut, Lebanon

The American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for the Sir Michael Atiyah Chair in Mathematical Sciences. The successful applicant shall also assume the position of Director of the Center of Advanced Mathematical Sciences, starting October 1, 2017.

A generous gift from the Simons Foundation created the Michael Atiyah Chair in Mathematical Sciences at the American University of Beirut. The chair is named in honor of Sir Michael Atiyah, a strong supporter of AUB's Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences (CAMS) and one of the greatest living mathematicians of the 20th century.

The Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences plays a unique role in advancing the mission of AUB and in attracting and retaining exceptional scholars as members of its intellectual community. While promoting and contributing to the graduate studies in the mathematical sciences at AUB, the Center helps create opportunities for advanced research and teaching, and provides scientists at AUB, Lebanon and the region with a vibrant academic environment for performing first-class research in the mathematical sciences. The main objective of CAMS is to act as a focal point for collaborative and interdisciplinary research among mathematicians and scientists in the region, partly by hosting visitors for various intervals of time, and also by organizing topical meetings, workshops/seminars, and conferences in the mathematical sciences.
Candidates for the joint Atiyah Chair and Directorship of CAMS must be deemed world-class academics who've achieved impactful work and scholarly recognition in the field of mathematical sciences. They must also have demonstrated experience and leadership in academic administration. The director reports to the Office of the Provost and is responsible for the academic management of the Center including: developing research programs; planning and supporting activities; encouraging dialogue within and beyond AUB; integrating the activities of CAMS with faculties and programs at AUB; building working relations with experts in the region; and developing relationships with other institutions and organizations throughout the region and the world. The director is also responsible for the overall administration of the Center and oversees its day-to-day activities, organizes planning and implementation, and most importantly, coordinates fundraising efforts with the Development Office and the Office of the Provost.

Applicants should include a statement of interest, a detailed curriculum vitae, and the names and addresses of five referees. Deliberations begin on May 8, 2017 and continue until a candidate is selected. Email submissions with attachments are preferred (send to: md02@aub.edu.lb).
