Postdoctoral Research Associate

Job Summary/Basic Function:
We invite applications for a 12 month postdoctoral research associate position at the University of North Texas with Professor Marcus L. Young in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. This position also involves working closely with UNT faculty and the sponsoring agency (Department of Defense). The focus of this research program will be to study the processability and field responsive properties of non-magnetic and magnetic strain glass alloys. Non-magnetic and magnetic strain glass alloys will be produced by vacuum arc-melting and subsequently processed by rolling to plate, rod, and/or wire. Some wire will be further processed to powder and samples will be made by powder compaction methods such as ECAP or HIP. Heat treatments may be performed to improve the field responsive and/or mechanical properties. The relevant structure-property relationships will be evaluated through microstructural, thermal, and mechanical property characterization techniques. Field responsive properties such as supereleasticity and shape memory properties will also be studied. Samples in various processing conditions will be characterized using different scanning calorimetry (DSC), dual beam focused ion beam (FIB), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and, if necessary, synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction (SR-XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and/or local electrode atom probe (LEAP) tornography to correlate responsive properties and mechanisms with microstructural features. Mechanical properties will be evaluated using Vickers hardness and tensile and/or compression testing. The work is part of a federal agency funded program of research and offers opportunity for extensive interaction with faculty and government experts in materials science and engineering experimentation, modeling, and fundamental theory.
