The Extension Agent-at-Large is a position with a maximum duration of 3 years that focuses on expanding the diversity of the Cooperative Extension agent workforce. The Agent-at-Large position allows for employment of outstanding individuals with great promise to be presented with a unique opportunity to learn the role of the agent, insight into the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, and the flexibility to learn system in various settings.

This position may be assigned to any program area (4-H, Agriculture, FCS, or Horticulture) and may be located in any county where a current agent vacancy exists. However, placement for Agent-at-Large positions will give preference to counties with funding challenges. The duties of the Agent-at-Large will be consistent with the duties of a regular agent.

The major job responsibilities of an Extension Agent, and therefore an Agent-at-Large, are as follows:
1) Educational Programming
2) Advisory Councils
3) Leadership
4) Public Accountability and Public Relations
5) Facilitation / Collaboration / Teamwork
6) Customer Service
7) Supervision

An Agent-at-Large will receive salary and benefits equitable to that of any newly employed agent. During the 3 year period, the Agent-at-Large will monitor the vacant agent positions that are posted and apply for positions that match their particular interests. The Agent-at-Large would be required to compete and interview for the open position(s) the same as an agent who might request a transfer. There is no guarantee of continued employment beyond the 3 year period for an Agent-at-Large; however the experience gained in the Agent-at-Large position allows the candidate to have the additional experience needed to be employed in the Cooperative Extension System.

The salary, travel and professional improvement funds of an Agent-at-Large will be paid on state funds. Program support funds will be provided by the county in which the Agent-at-Large is placed.

The number of Agent-at-Large candidates will be determined by the Cooperative Extension Administrative team based on the current budget situation and current vacancies.

Physical Requirements

Job-related travel including overnight stays; visiting clientele at sites throughout the county; standing/walking for long periods; handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds.


Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm, with evenings and weekends as needed. Most weeks will exceed 40 hours.


Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing with groups, individuals and through mass media.

Ability to use the computer for program delivery and management.

Ability to visit clientele at sites throughout the county.

Ability to plan and teach educational programs.

Demonstrated leadership and ability to serve as a positive role model.

Preferred Education/Experience

Bachelors or Master's Degree in the field of Family & Consumer Sciences such as FCS Education, Child & Family Studies, Nutrition/Dietetics, Family Science, Child Development, Fashion Merchandising or Interior Design.
