Job Description

Senior Optical Engineer

TeraDiode is a Massachusetts based high-growth startup and a world leader in developing high-power, high-brightness diode laser systems. Our kW-class direct diode laser technology is a disruptive force in the materials processing industry, which is currently dominated by fiber lasers and carbon dioxide lasers. Our patented wavelength beam combining technology was developed by our co-founders from MIT Lincoln Laboratory and is designed for defense, industrial, and commercial materials processing applications.

We seek a self-motivated laser engineer with experience in the development of a high tolerance, complex opto-mechanical products which have achieved medium to high volume shipment levels. Experience with high power lasers is a major plus.

Responsibilities
  • Lead optical design of TeraDiode's product line of high power, high brightness direct-diode lasers. This includes optical design of laser resonator, combiner, and fiber coupling.
  • Lead optical design in new products and make improvements to existing products. Optical design should include concept/architecture development, trade-off analysis, and error budget and tolerance analysis.
  • Develop and write specs for all optical components and work closely with vendors on negotiating specs and meeting cost requirements
  • Provide optical testing support
  • Help develop procedures, processes, and work instruction
  • Work with other members of the engineering and operations staff to ensure that products are developed to meet all performance and quality standards in a timely matter.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations

Preferred Qualifications
  • MS, PhD preferred in Optical Engineering, Physics, Optics or Lasers
  • 10 years industrial experience is preferred, especially in the design and development of laser systems
  • Hand-on optical laboratory skills including optical handling, assembly, and alignment
  • Expert in optical ray tracing using Zemax, especially with ability to analyze and optical system performance, image quality, and evaluate results in terms of optical aberrations
  • Knowledge in optics fabrication and testing methods
  • Strong knowledge in opto-mechanical design
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to interpret analysis and test results
  • Strong knowledge in geometrical tolerancing and dimensioning
  • Experience in the design and development of high tolerance, complex opto-mechanical products which achieve medium to high volume levels.
  • Experience with some or all of the following: optical design, micron level tolerances, solid state, fiber or gas lasers, kinematics, thermal modeling, mounting of optical components, optical alignment, and fixture design.
  • Knowledge and experience developing a product incorporating design for manufacturability (DFM) is highly desirable.
  • High tech experience within a fast-paced, start up environment
  • Successful track record accomplishing desired results
