The Interdisciplinary Health Science Initiative (IHSI) of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applicants to fill a vacancy for Research Biostatistician to provide consultation and guidance to the clients of the Illinois Biostatistical Core (IBC).

  • Provide expert statistical consulting for complex studies to Core clients
  • Provide consultation to Core clients on study design, sample size calculations, selection challenges
  • Provide consultation to Core clients on grant proposals needing biostatistical expertise
  • Provide consultation to Core clients on statistical analysis using the appropriate computation and graphical software
  • Maintain current knowledge of novel biostatistical methods
  • Maintain current knowledge of software that advances clinical/translational research
  • Prepare and conduct training/classes/outreach for the Biostatistical Core clients


Education: PhD in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, or related field. PhD/MD degrees preferred.

Experience and Knowledge:

Required: Minimum of 5 years of work experience in statistical consulting or related field. Strong background with standard and specialized appraoches for graphical and numerical data summary and advanced methods including, but not limited to, longitudinal modeling, quantile regression, hierarchical linear modeling, and survival analysis. Extensive experience using statistical software and packages such as R, SAS, Stata, and SPSS. Strong experience and success with grant writing. Experience and success working independently in conceptualizing research study design and conducting analysis of complex data. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Attention to detail. Effective communication, personal relations, organizational, and team work skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, with minimal supervision. Knowledge of general academic structure, as well as the ability to interface in a professional manner with a wide variety of internal and external constituents, including faculty, university administration, and physicians.

Preferred: Experience managing complex workflows and working within a Biostatistical Core at or in a position associated with a Medical College. Experience with managing a work team. Understanding of the complexities of the University of Illnois' research enterprise. Experience with data visualization tools and software.

PROPOSED START DATE: As soon as possible after closing date. Salary commensurate with education and experience.

APPOINTMENT STATUS: Regular 100%-time academic professional appointment/12-month service basis. Eligible for full University benefits package.
