The University of Virginia seeks an hourly Laboratory Technician to assist with a research project at Blandy Experimental Farm on the effects of pesticides on bees. The technician will monitor alfalfa leaf-cutting bees, a primary pollinator of alfalfa, as they forage on treated plants in the greenhouse and field cages, and assess adult survival and offspring development. Work will comprise plant propagation,field observations, lab observations, sample preparation for chemical analysis, and data entry. Applicants must work well independently and have a professional attitude. Experience working with insects and/or pesticides is preferred, as is a certified pesticide applicators license. Work will be 40 hours per week, starting on/around May 1 and possibly continue through the end of field season depending on extension of funding.
Blandy Experimental Farm is a 700-acre University of Virginia research facility situated in the northern Shenandoah Valley, about 10 miles east of Winchester and 60 miles west of Washington, D.C.
This is a support position for the Blandy Experimental Farm research program that helps maintain a productive work environment for research projects.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to execute duties with minimal supervision. Ability to work in the field under harsh environmental conditions. Ability to organize and process samples in a well-organized and neat manner.
