General Description of Position:

This position is responsible for assisting the State Extension Consumer Food Safety Specialist and other partners with coordinating produce safety extension activities in the state of Kansas, particularly to ensure that Kansas fruit and vegetable producers are aware of and compliant with the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act Produce Safety rule.

Job Description:

  • Coordinate planning and implementation of food safety training of produce growers across the state of Kansas, including advertising of courses and working with other partners (such as Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas Farmers Union, KS Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association and others) across the state in planning trainings.  Ensure that adequate trainers are available for trainings, work with local Extension personnel to ensure that all local arrangements have been made (location, refreshments, etc), ensure adequate training materials are available, order certificates for trainings, carry out evaluation of trainings, and other tasks as needed.
  • Assist with teaching at produce safety training courses across the state. Training specific to the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule will be provided to the person in this position, but applicants are expected to have at least a basic knowledge of the following:
    1. Produce Safety Scientific Knowledge and Experience
    2. Fruit and Vegetable Production Knowledge
    3. Effective Training Delivery, and
    4. Knowledge of the FSMA Produce Safety Rule.
  • Work closely with the Kansas Department of Agriculture to assist with record-keeping related to the FSMA produce safety rule.
  • Respond to questions from Kansas Extension personnel and produce growers related to produce safety to assist them with meeting regulatory requirements and improving the safety of their produce.  Provide assistance with carrying out on-farm produce safety assessments and assisting farmers in writing on-farm food safety plans.
  • Assist with writing publications, making videos, websites, social media and related communications to provide information to produce growers related to the FSMA produce safety rule. 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with knowledge of produce safety as evidenced by academic courses, professional development and/or professional experience appropriate to the needs of the position.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Evidence of strong academic and/or professional performance as documented by college transcripts, acceptance into a graduate program or documented success in increasingly responsible professional positions.
  • Experience in coordinating trainings or other events.
  • Experience in carrying out training.
  • Proficiency with common computer programs for word and data processing.
  • Willingness to perform training in various parts of Kansas (travel)
  • Access to a personal vehicle and the ability to obtain/maintain a valid driver's license
  • Applicants are expected to have at least a basic knowledge of the following:

    1. Produce Safety Scientific Knowledge and Experience
    2. Fruit and Vegetable Production Knowledge
    3. Effective Training Delivery, and
    4. Knowledge of the FSMA Produce Safety Rule.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. in Horticulture or Food Science or a closely related field.
  • Experience in conducting Extension and/or outreach programs.
  • Training experience in produce safety with produce farmers
  • Extensive knowledge of produce safety
  • Extensive experience working with small-scale commercial fruit and vegetable production
  • Experience in working with multiple stakeholder groups related to produce safety

Salary Range / Pay Rate:

11A: $53,515 - $85,623

Please note: the minimum salary for this position is $53,515. Actual salary will be determined based on the candidate's experience, education, internal equity and departmental funding. Salary offers are typically made between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range. The range indicated includes both the typical hiring range and potential future progression. "
