Under the general supervision of the Associate Department Head and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Advisory Center and the Associate Department Head, the incumbent will work with the Associate Department Head for Undergraduate Studies and faculty to provide academic advising services and other related duties.

The primary focus of this position is on advising undergraduate students about academic requirements, regulations, and procedures. Additionally, the position provides program support. The incumbent is expected to work independently within established policies and regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Advises undergraduate Psychological Science majors, at all levels, in planning their academic program, including advice in specific curriculum decisions, appropriate choice and scheduling of courses, selection and change of major or minor, deadlines and other related matters.
  • Audits academic records to determine student's progress toward meeting general education requirements and pre-requisites.
  • Counsels students with academic difficulties, warned students, and students contemplating withdrawal.
  • Serves as a resource to students, faculty, parents and others to answer questions about program or academic policies.
  • Prepares materials and participates in new student orientation, open house, and other events and workshops, including assisting in presentation of materials regarding enrollment and advising.
  • Presentation of materials regarding enrollment and advising.
  • Serves as a resource for PeopleSoft and Student Admin Data issues for faculty, students and staff; assists new faculty with system issues and provides materials relevant to advising requirements; provides advising materials to, assists in training of and providing ongoing support for regional campus program assistants, and serves as a resource to regional campus faculty.
  • Will assist with undergraduate course scheduling and compilation of program statistics.
  • Assists undergraduate students with questions/problems about the Psychological Sciences Department's experimental participation pool.
  • Assists in ongoing review and updating of materials on the Psychological Sciences Department website, particularly with respect to undergraduate curriculum and program materials.
  • Maintains appropriate files and records, and assists in compiling statistical reports (e.g., on enrollments, majors/minors, advisees) for the Department Head, Associate Head, faculty and staff.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in Psychology or related field
  2. One to two years of experience in advising post-secondary students
  3. Knowledge of academic programs in higher education
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to relate well to students, faculty and/or parents

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Master's degree in Higher Education administrative, Counseling, or Liberal Arts and Sciences
  2. Two or more years counseling or advising undergraduate students in an academic setting
  3. Strong computer skills including knowledge of and experience with academic software such as PeopleSoft, website development software (e.g. WordPress, and social media
  4. Knowledge of psychological science in general to better serve our majors in making early decisions on courses and paths to consider
  5. Knowledge of PeopleSoft, Hyperion reporting tools, Advapp advisory appointment system
  6. Demonstrated ability to relate to and work well with students, faculty, and parents
  7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team setting to accomplish program's goals
  8. Excellent communication, public speaking, and presentation skills
  9. Excellent organizational, interpersonal and decision-making skills
  10. Experience teaching and/or coordinating and running advising events/programs
  11. Proficiency in use of computer applications for gathering and reporting data, communicating with students and scheduling
