Required Qualifications (Evidenced by attached resume):
PhD in Communication, Mass Communication, or other relevant field such as Social Psychology, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, or Education in hand by July 1, 2017.
Experience designing and conducting research; experience conducting workshops or teaching courses at the undergraduate level; demonstrated expertise in gender studies in STEM;
ability to communicate research results to both expert and non-expert audiences and excellent writing and presentation skills in English.
Preferred Qualifications:
High levels of proficiency in qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods social science or educational research; experience designing new curriculum; experience conducting workshops or teaching courses at the graduate level and/or for experienced STEM professionals. Proficiency in data and/or project management; experience with grant writing and/or grant management; previous experience in conducting workshop in satellite locations in both nationally and internationally. Participation in other diversity programs either as an undergraduate or graduate and a commitment to promoting diversity in academe. Previous experience working as part of a team.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will contribute to research on gender roles in STEM and help advance the Center’s research-based curriculum.

The Alda Method combines improvisational theater techniques that help scientists to pay dynamic attention to the needs of their listeners and learn to spontaneously adjust to those needs. This approach integrates techniques to help scientists distill their message, shape compelling stories, create common ground, and use conversational language that fosters genuine human connections. This Postdoctoral position is designed to advance science communication research and help create new training modules. The successful candidate will support the Center’s commitment to advancing research-based science communication curriculum.

This Postdoctoral Research Associate will focus on advancing research and training curriculum designed to support women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and will develop research projects designed to advance the Alda Center’s science communication training methods. Working in collaboration with Alda Center faculty and staff, the successful candidate will be responsible for synthesizing research on gender roles and STEM, conducting new research, analyzing data, co-designing new curriculum, testing curriculum in the Alda Center’s on-the-road-workshops, presenting work at conferences, preparing publications, collaborating on grant proposals. The incumbent will receive support to become certified Alda Science Communication Trainer and will help to implement Alda training in the U.S. and abroad. The training experience will enable the incumbent to conduct research on science communication in the context of real-world application. The candidate may also teach up to three credits per semester depending on need and interest and may also help to train new Alda Center trainers.

  • Conduct research in the field of science communication, including conducting literature reviews, collecting and analyzing data,
  • Collaborate with Alda Center faculty and staff to design and trial new curriculum
  • Conduct on-the-road workshops and/or teach courses at SBU
  • Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. May also assist in grant writing.
  • Other duties as assigned, which may include attending scientific conferences and meetings.

Special Notes: This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
