Overview
Under the direction of an administrator, performs complex skilled and semi-skilled journey level duties requiring significant knowledge of electrical / electronics systems used in educational facilities. Incumbents in this position will work closely with management and design professionals in planning, implementing and inspecting a wide variety of construction and renovation projects. Performs other duties as required.

Representative Duties

The duties recorded below are representative of the duties of the class and are not intended to cover all the duties performed by incumbent(s) of any particular position. The essential duties of the class are indicated with an asterisk *
1. Installs, maintains, diagnoses, monitors, operates, rebuilds and repairs motors, control and lighting circuits, electrical control equipment, transformers, building automation system solar photovoltaic system, conduit and duct systems and other types of electrical and power systems and equipment; trouble-shoots electrical system problems and takes corrective actions as necessary. Installs, tests, repairs and maintains electronic hardware components of all types*
2. Performs preventative maintenance and energy conservation modifications utilizing journey-level electrician practices*
C3. hecks circuits and performs basic electrical repairs of a variety of specialized equipment, such as washing machines, dryers and dishwashers*
4. Reads and interprets electrical plans and specifications and checks for conformity with codes, regulations and safety orders*
5. Performs brazing work required in the course of electrical installations and repairs*
6. Performs line work, including routing of power from main source and running electrical line and conduit through sub flooring, interior walls, exterior walls and ceilings as necessary*
7. Lays out and works from plans, sketches, blueprints or other instructions*
8. Operates various types of service equipment such as forklifts, boom and scissor lifts and other types of construction equipment*
9. Operates a computer to perform data entry, access email and District announcements, etc*
10. Coordinates existing projects with outside contractors, including inspecting work completed by contractors for compliance with specifications and codes; prepares estimates of time and material required for modifications and repairs; keeps records and prepares reports for work done and materials used*
11. Services and otherwise maintains the working order of electrical shop and equipment.
12. Serves on a variety of District committees as requested.
13. May perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:


  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. or the equivalent*; AND
  • Four (4) years of experience directly related to the required functions of this position.
    * High School education equivalency equals an adult education diploma or four (4) years of full-time paid work experience.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registration and Other Requirements:
  • Hold and maintain a valid California General Electrician Certification, which requires renewal every three years.
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver's license throughout duration of employment with the District.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • The completion of a formal trade apprenticeship program or an Associate's Degree in construction, building technology and maintenance practices or a related field.
  • Four (4) years of experience at journey level in electrical system installation.
  • Ability to perform welding work.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: May be acquired through education, training and/or experience.
    Knowledge of: District policies and procedures; the policies, procedures, rules and regulations affecting departmental activities; the materials, tools, equipment and practices used in electrical installation and repair of buildings and related equipment; applicable safety methods associated with departmental equipment and activities; computer usage for data entry, accessing email and District announcements and utilizing software.
    Ability to: use, operate, maintain and repair tools and equipment; repair and maintain buildings and related structural facility electrical issues; read and write at the level necessary for successful job performance; read and work from plans and specifications; follow safety rules and regulations; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work; perform heavy physical labor; learn and interpret the rules, regulations and policies and procedures of the District and those affecting departmental operations; effectively operate a computer to perform position functions; utilize keyboarding skills commensurate with the required functions for this position; demonstrate clear evidence of sensitivity to, and the understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

    Supplemental Information

    WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    No assigned permanent staff to supervise. May provide work direction to short-term and student employees and outside contractors.

    PHYSICAL EFFORT:
    Regular, and at times sustained exertion of heavy physical effort such as bending, stooping, crawling, crouching, pushing, pulling, working in confined spaces and lifting and carrying moderately heavy items (20 to 50 lbs) and occasionally very heavy items (100 lbs or more); the operation of vehicles, shop equipment and hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand/eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations.

    Faculty, staff, administrators, students and the general public.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Exposure to adverse weather conditions, extreme heat or cold, noise from equipment and machinery, strong and/or toxic fumes and chemicals, high pressure gases and liquids, dusts, machinery hazards, electrical currents, working in confined spaces or overhead for extended periods of time.

    PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
    1. The successful applicant will be required to complete a medical history questionnaire and must agree to undergo and pass a pre-employment physical examination, based on the physical requirements of the position, prior to employment. The physician will be selected and paid for by the District. Disabilities not related to the essential physical job requirements will not preclude the applicant from being hired.
    2. Education Code § 87408.6 states that no person shall be initially employed by a community college district in an academic or classified position unless the person has submitted to an examination within the past sixty (60) days to determine that he or she is free of active tuberculosis.
    3. As a condition of employment the position you are applying for will require that you provide fingerprints to the local police department. The fee charged by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the fingerprint report is the employee's responsibility. If you should be offered this position you will be asked to sign a payroll deduction form which will authorize the District to deduct the fee charged by the DOJ from your first paycheck.
