Definition

Under direct supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, to coordinate and supervise the work of staff involved in campus landscape and sports turf maintenance; and to perform related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

a. Confer with the Grounds Supervisor and other administrators in landscaping and planning the maintenance program for campus landscape and sports field turf.

b. Prioritize, schedule, coordinate, supervise, review, document, and participate in the work of campus landscape and sports turf maintenance crews.

c. Identify departmental resource and supply needs, procurement, and allocation while maintaining budget goals and tracking open accounts.

d. Conduct routine department equipment safety and maintenance checks.

e. Ensure crew members are equipped with and use the appropriate PPE (Personal Protection

Equipment).

f. Coordinate department landscape equipment maintenance and repair with department and outside service mechanics.

g. Conduct equipment operation and safety training for staff.

h. Calibrate, maintain, adjust, program, troubleshoot, and repair of campus central control irrigation system, irrigation controllers, valves, wire, piping, sprinkler heads, and related equipment.

i. Program and adjust campus irrigation systems regarding weather changes, campus events, sport field games, practices, and routine maintenance.

j. Control irrigation fitting, pipe, and supply inventory; order and stock as necessary while tracking department budget and open accounts.

k. Inspect and rectify irrigation drift and sprinkler alignment issues to maximize adequate coverage and minimize water run- off and overspray onto buildings and hardscapes.

l. Retrofit and modernize existing irrigation systems to improve water conservation and efficiency.

m. Utilize IPM (Integrated Pest Management) techniques to determine corrective actions for pest and insect issues.

n. Stock, order, and inventory pesticides and follow all label and MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet)

rules and regulations.

o. Apply pesticides and rodenticides according to county, state, and federal regulations.

p. Analyze campus schedules and routines to identify best windows or opportunity to safely apply pesticides and rodenticides.

q. Post, record, and submit pesticide and rodenticide records to county and state governing agencies.

r. Manage and schedule sports field mowing, cultivation, fertilization, seeding, infield grooming/grading, and renovation.

s. Monitor and order inventory of seed, fertilizer, and bulk materials for campus landscapes and sports field maintenance while tracking open accounts to fit department budget goals.

t. Coordinate, schedule, and oversee proper artificial turf care, grooming, and disinfection.

u. Coordinate, schedule, and oversee campus mowing to minimize disturbance of students, faculty, and staff.

v. Coordinate, schedule, oversee, and monitor inner campus and campus parking lot sweeping duties. w. Coordinate, participate, train subordinates, record, schedule, oversee, and monitor campus tree health, pruning, and care.

x. Direct workers and participate in the cleaning of campus rooftops.

z. Perform related work as required

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

1. Approved methods of installation and maintenance of campus landscape plantings, trees, and sports field turf.

2. Common plant, tree, and turf diseases and pests and the approved methods and chemicals used in their control using IPM (Integrated Pest Management) techniques.

3. Weed identification and appropriate control solutions in turf, planter, and industrial areas.

4. Pesticides, chemicals, materials, and fertilizers related to landscape, sports field, and rodent control.

5. Retrofit, upgrade, design, and improve irrigation systems consisting of drip, spray, and rotor devices.

6. Modern landscape design with resource and water conservation.

7. Computer utilization including email communications, record keeping, reporting, and document processing.

8. Central control irrigation software and hardware.

9. General principles of supervision and training.

10. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to:

11. Hold and maintain in good standing, a California Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified

Applicators License, license may obtained during probationary period.

12. Communicate in person or via email, cell phone, radio, office  phone, fax with sports field coaches, campus staff, instructors, public, subordinates, vendors, and contractors.

13. Create and update documents using Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and Power Point.

14. Plan and coordinate the work of grounds personnel.

15. Work from verbal instructions, documents, sketches, and blueprints.

16. Follow directions given by Ground Supervisor and allocate resources and man-power as required.

17. Provide positive and negative feedback to Grounds Supervisor to allow for improvement of department programs, tasks, labor, and equipment use.

18. Use and instruct others in the use of the proper methods, tools, materials and equipment used in the grounds maintenance trade.

19. Design landscapes.

20. Maintain simple records.

21. Supervise the work of others.

22. Hold and maintain California State Driver's License Class C.

23. Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices.

24. Operate campus heavy equipment, carts, trucks, tractors, mowers, and sweepers; provide training to Grounds staff on the proper use of such equipment.

25. Operate district vehicles observing legal and defensive driving practices, and possession of a valid, appropriate and unrestricted California Driver License.

26. Operate and hold license for fork truck operation.  May be acquired during probation period.

27. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience:

29. Individuals possessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above are considered to possess the necessary education.

30. Two (2) years' experience in grounds or sports field management and maintenance.

 

Conditions of Employment

This is a full time, 12 month per year position. The normal hours of work are to be arranged between 5:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. 

 

Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.
