SHARED RESOURCE LAB MANAGER
Pathology Research

Occupational Summary
Manage a core electron microscopy shared resource that provides technical services to Duke Medical Center and other affiliated research groups. Perform experiments using microscopy and microtomy instrumentation; direct and teach students and faculty; and ensure exceptional service to the research community in a timely, efficient, and economical manner.

Keep detailed and precise records of specialized laboratory techniques with impeccable documentation and work standards. Provide documentation on effort, instrument and supply costs, and services that contribute to operation expenses; assist with budgeting.

Typical Work Performed
Teach and supervise graduate and postdoctoral students, residents, and faculty the use of instruments and methods. Manage projects, design experiments, advise on suitability of experiments proposed by clients, help them interpret and analyze their data, and offer advice on directions to take for future experiments.

Research new methods from the literature or from colleagues in the field for use investigating new projects (e.g., 3-dimentional electron microscopy). That is to say, work with principal investigators and the laboratory director to coordinate and direct state-of-the-art procedures.

Handle and keep up with a wide variety of specimens, which may include embryonic zebrafish kidney, cardiac and skeletal muscle, and intestine; other animal tissue, C. elegans (a tiny worm) gastrointestinal and reproductive tracts; yeasts and other fungi, bacteria, cell cultures; and subcellular organellse and virus preparations.

Use specialized techniques that may be lengthy and delicate, require precise skills, and necessitate figuring out how to keep track of them. Learn new and highly technical procedures; and design, evaluate, and modify protocols, as well as learn new and complex technical procedures.

Be able to research online, from books, or from colleagues how to handle new, complex material and figure out what structures to look for and how they should appear. This requires knowledge of what the normal ultrastructure looks like (or ability to research it) and how mutation or treatment of the experimental system is altered by manipulation and changes the appearance.

Design, develop, evaluate, and modify protocols. Prepare detailed technical standard operating procedures, data reports, safety policies and manuals. Enter these electronically on the Duke website and maintain them as necessary changes are made. Possess typing ability, computer skills, and image processing knowledge. Process large data sets into 3D images.

Manage and coordinate different projects in different stages, as well as laboratory operations such as ordering supplies and instruments, making reagents, taking inventory and ensuring proper stocks. Completely manage the Shared Resource with respect to scheduling, teaching, documenting proper use of the equipment, noting supplies and restocking working solutions and stock solutions as necessary to ensure that sufficient back-ups are always available.

Oversee the installation and maintenance of the instruments, either by repairing them or working with the service engineer to keep them in working order. Keep the laboratory in operation by noting necessary actions such as maintenance, stocks, supplies and methods, and ensuring that all are taken care of and inform the director of any problems.

Ensure that the scientific data produced in the lab is sound (accurate and reproducible) by managing the users and communicating with the director, experts in the field, and principal investigators.
