Higher Education Analyst I (2444) New Position in Institutional Research (target July 1, 2017)

Context

The role of the Institution Research (IR) office is to be an active and creative agent in the process of institutional self-examination and improvement. This is done through:
  • IR Services - Executive Support: research, analysis and policy recommendations
  • IR Products - Standard reports for external agencies and internal management, consistent over time and reconciling across all products
  • IR Data Management - Key reporting elements from enterprise systems, institutional survey data, and inter-institutional data exchanges, compiled and transformed for longitudinal referential integrity
IR is currently expanding support for internal reports to serve academic administrators in the schools. A new position is being added to help support this service expansion.

Occupational Summary
The Higher Education Analyst I will serve on team working to develop standard datasets, interactive reports and data visualizations to be published on the University's Tableau server.

Work Performed
  • Collaborate with decision makers to clarify data needs and develop appropriate reporting protocols.
  • Translate business requirements into specifications used to implement reports and dashboards.
  • Work with staff overseeing administrative systems to develop verified data extracts designed to serve multiple constituents and reporting requirements.
  • Document metadata and update schedules for standard data extracts. Iteratively design interactive reports and visualizations from initial concept to prototypes that can be presented to end users for feedback, then finalized based on that feedback.
  • Publish reports and dashboards to Duke's Tableau server and provide documentation, support and training to end users in how to use, interpret, or modify the reports.
  • Respond to ad-hoc data queries from students, faculty, other offices within the institution, and external agencies.
  • Assist in interpreting and reporting on results of institutional surveys of students, parents, alumni, faculty, and staff.
  • Assist in other Institutional Research projects, as requested.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training: Work requires advanced knowledge of both statistical analysis and interpretation, generally acquired through completion of a masters degree in social-sciences related field.
Experience: 1-2 years of data analysis experience. Experience with higher education or financial data is preferred.
Skills: The position requires initiative, curiosity, attention to detail and effective communication skills. A strong statistical background with demonstrated ability to analyze quantitative data is essential. Experience with statistical software is required; preferably SPSS. Strong ability with Excel is also required. Proficiency with Tableau data visualization software required. Knowledge of databases and SQL is desirable.
