CURATOR, LIVING ANIMAL COLLECTIONS
The Duke Lemur Center (DLC) is part of Duke University, a Research I university. The DLC is a specialized center with a focus on non-invasive research, conservation breeding, education of students and the general public, and conservation work in Madagascar. The Curator will plan, manage, coordinate and participate in a variety of curatorial and administrative activities for the DLC animal collection of approximately 250 prosimian primates. The Curator will manage the animal colony for sustainability and strategic growth and to support research use, conservation and education goals. The Curator will support DLC staff to insure best practices in all aspects of animal care, research and management. The Curator, Living Animal Collection reports to the Director and Director of Operations and Administration.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop the institutional animal collection plan (ICP), together with Director, Director of Operations & Administration and Animal Welfare Committee.
- Determine and oversee the annual breeding and transfer plan, in conjunction with both ICP goals and the Prosimian Taxon Advisory Group regional collection plan and Species Survival Plan (SSP) goals and recommendation.
- Plan breeding and birth season activities to maximize successful reproduction,infant survival and rearing of infants bydams while maintaining compatibility within social groups.
- Plan on-site animal moves relating to seasonal needs, changing colony composition, research needs, education activities and animal welfare.
- Plan group/species composition and management in the DLC's 9 free-range natural forest habitats to maximize both research opportunities and animal welfare.
- Work with Primate Technician Supervisor to oversee animal technician staff, helping to coordinate animal moves and introductions on-site, and to respond to issues in group social interactions.
- Communicate regularly with and coordinate curatorial activities with other DLC departments: Operations, Husbandry, Veterinary, Research, Education & Tours, Animal Training/Student Projects, Development & Communication, particularly as curatorial activities affect day-to-day/month-to-month animal management, housing and breeding and transfer plans.
- Supervise the Registrar and work closely with the Data Manager to insure excellent record-keeping for animals on-site and out on loan.
- Oversee logistics of incoming and outgoing animal shipments. Review and sign breeding loan agreements, animal transfer forms, etc.
- Assist with permit application and reports to permitting authorities.
- Work closely with the Research Manager to coordinate animal use for research.
- Working with the DLC Research Committee, advise on research projects concerning potential impacts of research on animal welfare, breeding management, animal group interactions, and timing of transfers.
- Working with the Animal Welfare Committee, develop new animal husbandry and management protocols as needed.
- Assist the Director of Operations & Administration with facilities development and maintenance, planning for emergencies, and staff policies, development and evaluation.
- Work closely with Behavioral Management Coordinate to identify opportunities to utilize operant conditioning to promote voluntary cooperation with animal care, animal management, veterinary and research procedures.
- Participate in the annual review and revision of Standard Operating Procedures.
- Develop annual Curatorial budget. Contribute to other departmental budget planning.
- With the Director of Operations and & Administration, lead the process to maintain and renew the DLC's certification as a related facility in the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA).
- Assist Development Officer with fundraising efforts and proposals.
- Contribute to scientific grant proposals at request of Director and other senior staff.
- Travel relating to Curator activities.
- Promote a spirit of teamwork, professionalism and enthusiasm among DLC staff.
- Minimum 10 years' experience with primate care and management or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in animal collection management or equivalent experience.
- Experience with exotic species management in a research environment.
- Experience collaborating with AZA program (Taxon Advisory Groups, SSPs)
- Job duties require advanced knowledge of a specialized field
- Extensive knowledge of primate biology, husbandry and captive management, including prosimians.
- Excellent communication and team-building skills.
- Work requires excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to adapt to diverse work situations and to adjust to shifting priorities.

Work requires knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree in the sciences programs. Masters degree preferred.
