Perform a variety of complex duties involved in the design and construction of advanced electronic equipment, instruments and apparatus for utilization in research activities at Duke University.

Work Performed
Perform a variety of complex duties involved in the development, design, fabrication and testing of advanced electronic equipment, instruments and apparatus for utilization in research activities at Duke University. This is a temporary position only for one year of employment at the maximum. Confer with principal investigators to obtain necessary data for the development, design and construction of complex electronic instruments, devices and equipment; recommend modifications to specifications required to achieve desired results. Perform complex and extensive repairs on malfunctioning electronic instruments, devices and equipment by the replacement or fabrication of parts, soldering connections and making necessary adjustments and calibration; establish and follow a predetermined schedule of preventive maintenance. Provide technical assistance, instruction and consultation to faculty, student researchers and staff members for resolution of special problems. Determine and order parts and supplies necessary for completion of assigned projects; recommend the purchase or acquisition of electronic equipment or related accessories. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training: Work requires a background in Electronics normally acquired through a two year Associate degree program in electronics to become familiar with electronic equipment and experimental devices and apparatus common to an electronics research setting. Experience: Four years of related experience are required in lieu of an Associate degree in Electronics. Work requires 5 years related experience as an electronics technician to acquire competency in the design, construction, maintenance and calibration of electronics equipment and devices used in research. OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
