SUMMARY:

The incumbent is responsible for the collection of umbilical cord blood units and related procedural paperwork and documents for the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank at Duke University Medical Center. The incumbent reports to the CCBB Team Lead at Rex and will be involved in education of the mother/donor, data collection, and specialized laboratory procedures/techniques for the successful collection of umbilical cord blood units for public banking and directed donation. The incumbent is an integral member of a team of physicians, nurses, collection specialists, and other professionals providing cord blood collection and processing services for the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank. The work site for this Duke University position is at Rex Hospital, Raleigh, North Carolina. Work hours for this position are primarily weekday days with regular weekend coverage.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Educate the potential mother/donor about public cord blood banking so that she can make an informed choice regarding the volunteer donation of her infant#s cord blood.
Obtain informed consent from every mother/donor by providing information and discussion of the consent form, culminating with a written and signed document.
Obtain a detailed medical history from mother/donors following delivery and informed consent.
Record information on the Medical History Form and accurately enter into CCBB database.
Obtain delivery and neonatal information by reviewing the medical records of the mother and infant donor, and accurately record information on the appropriate form, performing follow up with OB clinical staff when needed.
Perform final reviews on all paperwork leaving the collection site, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all recorded information before it is delivered to the Collections Site Coordinator.
Ensure delivery of the informed consent, medical history, and delivery information forms to the CCBB laboratory and administrative offices for verification and inclusion into the cord blood unit files.
Ensure that maternal blood samples for infectious disease testing are collected by the collection site phlebotomist according to standard operating procedures. If samples are missed or are otherwise unusable, perform or facilitate the collection ofnew samples. # Collect the umbilical cord blood from either the delivered or the undelivered placenta according to collection procedures and deliver to the cord blood processing laboratory for processing and storage. Ensure and maintain complete confidentiality with regard to identity of the maternal/infant donor pair, as well as results of any tests and procedures, in accordance with CCBB standard operating procedures.
Assist with other obstetrics (OB) research projects as assigned.
Participate in the Quality Assurance Program for the development, implementation, and evaluation of cord blood banking, which may include writing and editing of standard operating procedures as directed by the Quality Manager for the CCBB program.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: RN preferred. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Excellent organizational skills. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Experience entering data in forms or a database. Data management including entering data in forms or a database. Ability to focus on and simultaneously manage numerous pieces of detailed information. Routine Phlebotomy. Knowledge of medical terms. CPR certification required. Phlebotomy experience and certification by a nationally recognized board/agency. Experience on a Labor & Delivery unitis highly desirable. Experience in cord blood banking is highly desirable, CCBB will train incumbent for position.
