Job Summary/Basic Function:
Microbiology-Synthetic Biology. Established research expertise using genetic techniques in microorganisms to construct pathways for the generation of bio-based products derived from plant feedstocks. Bacteria, yeast or algae could serve as production platforms. Endogenous pathways could also be engineered if appropriate. The focus is broadly aimed at small molecules like those identified by the U.S. Department of Energy as their top 10 compounds required by the chemical industry that could come from biological sources rather than fossil-based sources. Microbial engineering could have the dual purpose of bioenergy production as well as small molecules for the chemical industry. It is likely that this appointment will be made in the disciplines/departments of Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, and/or Materials Science and Engineering.
