Occupational Summary

Acts as an advisor to scientific collaborators to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems. Develops and administers milestone-driven schedules, laboratory activities, training activities and laboratory network interactions.
Frequently interacts with other labs and coordinates wider program activities with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods and reporting requirements. Develops and administers a validated proficiency testing program at the national and international levels. Assists in data management and in writing progress reports.

Work Performed
  • Administer and coordinate the technical activities and infrastructure related to the operation of a large network of specialized laboratories.
  • Develop and implement laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Manage and coordinate operational policies and procedures; coordinate with research staff on issues that impact laboratory services.
  • Coordinate and supervise the technical training of visiting scientists, students and new employees according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Develop, compose, and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Perform annual review and update of SOPs in coordination with the Quality Assurance Unit (QAU).
  • Coordinate and supervise routine and specialized technical procedures in multiple laboratories in relation to a global proficiency testing program.
  • Coordinate the collection, analysis, interpretation and documentation of all data generated by the participating laboratories within the Project.
  • Compile and maintain records, reports and documentation of program activities for use in program evaluation.
  • Maintain liaison with investigators, alliance manager, research personnel and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities.
  • Advise on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintain conformance with specific operational standards.
  • Maintain quality checks on safety of laboratories, including biohazards and insure maintenance of the facilities according to Good Laboratory Practices.
  • Assist in formulating and implementing the short and long-range goals for the operation of the laboratories; set priorities, assign responsibilities, and establish timetables.
  • Project future needs and formulate operational strategies consistent with projections.
  • Plan and schedule work for the group to ensure proper distribution of assignments.
  • Manage and coordinate the activities of a project(s) with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods and reporting requirements.
  • Evaluate and recommend new techniques and technologies. Install and maintain laboratory equipment in compliance with federal regulations.
  • Prepare technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results; coordinate the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress toward meeting Project milestones.
  • Plan and conduct meetings with collaborators to ensure compliance with established practices, to implement new policies and to keep employees abreast of current changes and standards.
  • Represent the laboratory in interactions with other laboratories in outside institutions.
  • Assure that laboratory technicians are properly trained in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and equipment specific requirements.
  • Coordinate the functions and operations of the laboratories with each other and with other institutional departments.
  • Provide guidance as requested regarding hiring, training, promotions, and disciplinary issues for technical personnel.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Education

Bachelors or Masters degree in the biological or health sciences.

Experience

Minimum of four years of experience working in research laboratories. Must have a minimum of two years of experience performing work specific to the position.
