DCRI is looking for an Informatics Analyst II to support the Pragmatic Health Systems Research (PHSR) team. Pragmatic Clinical Trials (PCTs) offers considerable promise to support a new system of clinical research. PCTs seek to yield more "actionable" information for practitioners and patients at a faster rate and lower cost than conventional randomized trials. Today the DCRI is applying pragmatic methodologies to catalyze change for the clinical research system.
The Pragmatic Health Systems Research (PHSR) Informatics Analyst II serves as an expert resource in supporting data analytics for the PHSR portfolio by performing a variety of activities related to data management, analysis, reporting, and visualization.
This includes the development, use, and evaluation of standards, models, processes, and systems to optimize the design and conduct of health systems research. This is often accomplished through modeling workflow, terminology, business rules, and specification of technology requirements. The PHSR Informatics Analyst II has an understanding of electronic health data, claims data, distributed research networks, research data standards and reporting, data visualization, and good clinical data management and biomedical informatics practices. The PHSR Informatics Analyst II designs and curates large medical claims and electronic health record data sets, often in a distributed research data environment. Close collaboration with other disciplines and departments within and across Duke and external organizations is necessary.
The Informatics Analyst II is typically the senior informatics leader on one or more biomedical research projects of moderate complexity and serves in preceptor capacity for other informatics staff.
Technical, Including Analytical and Research Support
- Provide informatics support on research projects, including requirements analyses, design, technical specification development, data collection, analysis, presentation, and reporting. Leverage cross-discipline training and experience to capture project requirements, while facilitating participation by clinical, scientific, operational, and information technology stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain programs to perform analyses and generate both routine and ad hoc reports.
- Develop and maintain a working knowledge of statistical principles and analysis considerations taken into account during planning of health services research.
- Consult on and provide direct technical support for research projects of high complexity and often requiring solutions not previously used by the project team or work group.
- Hold expert knowledge in domain modeling, relational database design, programming language(s),SAS, data transfer methods, and electronic health record and health care claims standards and/or analytical techniques used in research programs. Maintain an understanding of emerging tools and technologies.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of terminologies and coding procedures used in research and the health care environment.
- Contribute to the development of training, tools, and process documentation for both the department and for assigned projects.
- Work closely with information technology support for network, database, and hardware/software requirements throughout the software development lifecycle representing the research project requirements.
- Develop data models; lead and conduct validation and user acceptance testing as needed. Assess suitability of data sets to answer particular research questions.
- Specify and develop data characterization profiles and corresponding visualizations. Share learnings with data network participants. Summarize and report to internal and external leadership.
- Develop custom ad hoc reports and tools in support of clinical data management requirements. Develop metrics dashboards using commercial off-the-shelf data visualization packages.
- Further develop project-specific products or lessons that can be used for other projects and by other organizations.
- Troubleshoot issues across projects, identifying the underlying root causes and improvements for efficiency.
- Perform data analyst functions that generate knowledge via data mining, visualization, or other analytics. Serve as a resource to others performing this work. Lead the creation of best practices, resources, and tools that enable new analytical capabilities.
- Design and perform formal evaluation of informatics methods and products and report findings that can be generalized to the broader community.
- Educate internal and external partners on the value, role, and methods of informatics and health services research. Provide training on biomedical informatics and health services data management related concepts, applications, and tools. Develop and conduct training sessions for internal and external staff on a regular basis; present at conferences and/or publish in peer-reviewed journals.
- Maintain working knowledge of biomedical informatics, including technology, standards, systems, and methodologies used in health care and related research.
- Actively contribute to the project management activities of assigned projects and holds responsibility and accountability for assigned work contributing to the success of the project.
- Assist in defining work requirements for new projects and monitor the scope of assigned work within an ongoing project. This includes working with internal and external collaborators. Analyze and resolve issues that have the potential to jeopardize agreed upon deliverables.
- Contribute to the evaluation of costs, risks, benefits, and regulatory requirements of implementation options considered by project teams.
- Lead the development, implementation, migration, and validation of research data systems.
- Contribute to lessons learned as a routine part of the project lifecycle.
- Actively plan, manage, and report on work status; seek efficiencies wherever possible.
- Develop and maintain positive and effective relationships with informatics and cross-functional staff and collaborators, both within and external to the DCRI.

Work requires graduation from an accredited master's degree program providing training in biomedical informatics, or related field of study and 5 years of biomedical informatics experience; health services research experience highly preferred.
Completion of a bachelor's degree with seven years of experience supporting biomedical informatics projects, including two years in clinical or translational research.
None required beyond that described above.
Highly Preferred Skills
Experience in health services research environment.
Experience with distributed data networks strongly preferred.
Experience with large health care data sets including, electronic health records, Medicare claims, or other health care claims data sets preferred.
SAS experience is strongly preferred. RDBMS SQL valued.
