Required Qualifications (Evidenced by attached resume):
Doctoral Degree in Physics or foreign equivalent degree.
Ph.D. in Accelerator or Plasma Physics. Extensive knowledge on the beam dynamics and deep understanding of collective effects (e.g. plasma aspects of beam dynamics). Understanding of both theoretical and experimental aspects of accelerator physics.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Principal Investigator in the department of Physics and Astronomy, Prof. V.N. Litvinenko, in the developing and testing advanced cooling techniques for hadrons (specifically, advances coherent electron cooling). The proposed research will involve experimental tests using Coherent electron Cooling (CeC) system located in RHIC tunnel at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University and, when applied, at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The successful candidate will participate in the design of novel cooling schemes and their characterization via simulations and experimental tests. This includes the further development of the advance CeC system based on micro-bunching amplification and tests of its performance. Ultimately, the candidate should be able to determine capabilities of this novel cooling technique. There is a possibility of participating in CO2 laser driven plasma accelerator. This innovative research is optional. The selected candidate will be responsible for:
- Take an active role in the designing, simulating and experimentally verifying performance of advanced CeC. This includes the further development of beam diagnostics relevant for the experiment, the refinement of simulation tools and analysis of the experimental data.
- Interaction with research agencies, program Managers will be expected by direct involvement of the Postdoctoral Researcher when requested by the PI.
- Train and exchange ideas with Graduate students as well as playing active role in the Center for Accelerator Science and Education.
- Present the scientific findings at national and international conferences, as well as publishing results in scientific journals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Special Notes: Travel to conferences or collaborative meetings may be required. The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Weekend work may be required. One year appointment with possibility to extend.

About Stony Brook:
Stony Brook University, home to many highly ranked graduate research programs, is located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island's scenic North Shore. Our 1,100-acre campus is home to 24,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students and more than 13,500 faculty and staff, including those employed at Stony Brook Medicine, Suffolk County's only academic medical center and tertiary care provider. The University is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and co-manager of nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), a multidisciplinary research laboratory supporting world class scientific programs utilizing state-of-the-art facilities such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, the National Synchrotron Light Source, and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials, and the New York Blue IBM BG/L+P supercomputer, owned by Stony Brook and managed by BNL. Stony Brook is a partner in managing the Laboratory for the Department of Energy, and is the largest institutional scientific user of BNL facilities. As such, many opportunities exist for collaborative research, and in some cases, joint appointments can be arranged.
