Duties of Position: Responsible for the coordination of interpreting and speech-to-text services for students, staff, and visitors of Harper College. Responsible for communicating the service assignments to the staff interpreters, contractual and contingent interpreters, and speech-to-text providers.
Coordinates interpreting or speech-to-text services for students, staff, and visitors at Harper College.
Works independently under minimal supervision in coordinating interpreter and speech-to-text service provider schedules effectively and efficiently.
Maintains regular, ongoing communication with staff, contingent, contractual and agency interpreters and speech-to-text providers.
Locates and employs contractual/agency interpreters and speech-to-text providers to fulfill the requests.
Responds to and resolves issues that may arise with the service coordination.
Assists the Manager, Accommodation Services with implementing and enforcing policies and procedures.
Maintains an accurate, timely data recording of the services and expenditures in the database.
Works with the Bilingual Assistant in preparing payments for contractual service providers.
Maintains and updates the disability management software (AIM).
Establishes and maintains effective working relationship with the interpreters, speech-to-text service providers, and agencies.
Interprets for student courses and staff meetings when needed.
Participates in departmental and college meetings and committees as appropriate.
Maintains professional competence through meetings, in-service training, professional development workshops, and continued interpreter training.
Arranges professional development for interpreters working with other agencies/organizations.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager, Accommodation Services.
Educational Requirements: Bachelor's degree in interpreting, human services, education, or related area required. Completed accredited interpreting training program is strongly preferred. Illinois Advanced Proficiency License required; and Master Proficiency License is preferred.
Experience Requirements: 3 years of post-secondary interpreting experience. Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language. Three years of scheduling and coordination experience. Knowledge of Deaf culture. Knowledge of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) standards and practices. Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail are vital. Flexibility in responding quickly to multiple schedule changes, including responding outside of scheduled work hours. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; must be able to manage multiple requests and changes on a daily basis.
