Assistant Director, Academic Initiatives and Assessment

The George Mason University Office of the Provost is seeking a full-time Assistant Director of Academic Initiatives and Assessment to join INTO George Mason University (INTO Mason). Acting as project manager for academic initiatives, including:

  • Developing, managing and fulfilling reporting obligations for Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) reaccreditation process (2017-2019) and all CEA reporting requirements post-reaccreditation;
  • Collecting, managing and reporting on assessment data for internal and external reporting purposes (e.g., senior Center Leadership, Management or Joint Venture Board);
  • Coordinating the center's academic development program;
  • Coordinating reports/materials for technical systems development;
  • Developing and delivering trainings for academic systems (e.g., attendance and assessment);
  • Designing and directing studies, including the development of reliable and valid assessment instruments and models, to measure the impact of and facilitate improved outcomes for instruction and academic services;
  • Contributing English Language requirements to relevant academic initiatives (e.g., Special Programs), including researching and maintaining language examination concordances for admissions and progression;
  • Coordinating English Language placement testing for all new students;
  • Serving as INTO Mason liaison to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment on all academic data and reporting needs for the division;
  • Serving as CEA accreditation consultant for all JV administrative areas;
  • Coordinating timely feedback for all significant English Language curriculum change proposals as a member of each program's Curriculum and Assessment Committee;
  • Chairing Instructional Materials Committee; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position will report to the Associate Director for Curriculum and Instruction and work closely with the Academic Director in facilitating the continuing assessment efforts in these areas. The Assistant Director also works with the entire INTO Mason faculty and staff to promote good assessment practices in the center and may be called upon to represent the department at various meetings. The incumbent will prepare reports, develop and conduct trainings, and make presentations on a regular basis. This position is required to teach four credits of English Language courses per semester as an instructor or term Assistant Professor, depending on qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • A graduate degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, or a closely related field;
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of language and educational research and assessment theories and practices;
  • Demonstrate both quantitative and qualitative research skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal, public speaking and writing skills;
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment while taking initiative as appropriate;
  • Strong organizational skills and able to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines; and
  • Knowledge and experience working with multiple English language assessments is a must.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Doctorate or terminal degree;
  • Willingness/ability to work a traditional work schedule (8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., five days/week);
  • Previous experience in any of the following areas: working with faculty on curriculum development, student learning outcomes assessment, leading and facilitating workshops on CEA accreditation and assessment topics, or involvement in accreditation processes;
  • Advanced skills in SPSS and/or SAS;
  • A minimum of five years of work experience in an intensive English program or in an institution of higher education;
  • Experience teaching English for Academic Purposes, English Specific Purposes, or writing courses for students at the undergraduate or graduate level; and
  • Interest/ability to travel internationally to teach at the Mason Korea campus for a semester.
