Working Title: Laboratory Specialist

Position Type: University Operational and Administrative Staff

Department: Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics

Location: Charlottesville

Posting Date: 12-09-2016

Posting Summary:
Dr. Michael Guertin's group is seeking a motivated lab specialist to join our Molecular Genomics lab. We are located within the Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Department and the Center for Public Health Genomics at the University of Virginia. The candidate will learn and perform molecular genomics techniques (ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, PRO-seq, RNA-seq, etc.). Additionally, the candidate is expected to perform standard molecular biology techniques such as qPCR, next-generation sequencing library preparations, Western blots, etc. The candidate will be matched with close mentorship as they learn to become independent at the bench.

About the Guertin Lab: Our group is at the interface of molecular biology and computational biology. We develop and adopt experimental techniques and software to study basic mechanisms of transcription and chromatin function within the context of cancer biology. We apply our methods to a diverse number of projects: inferring and predicting transcription factor binding intensities, defining mechanisms of glucocorticoid-induced apoptosis using time-course genomics data, determining the mechanisms of steroid resistance in blood and breast cancer, identifying the target rate-limiting steps for transcription factors, and constructing transcriptional regulatory networks from genomics data. Visit our website: www.guertinlab.org.

Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Biomedical Science, Development, Genomics, or a related field in hand by start date. Must have familiarity with standard molecular biology techniques and the ability to follow protocols, as well as self-motivation and time management skills. Previous experience in an academic lab setting is preferred.

This is a restricted position contingent upon continued funding.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Self-motivation and time management skills.
2. Independence, creativity, and passion for science.
