The Williams Institute, a national research center on sexual orientation and gender identity law and policy at UCLA School of Law, seeks an experienced and energetic communications professional with a passion for advancing the mission of the Institute. Under general direction of the Executive Director and members of the Williams Institute Senior Management Team, the Communications Manager provides proactive media counsel and services on behalf of the Williams Institute.
The Communications Manager serves as the primary communications person for the Williams Institute. The Communications Manager will work with senior staff and researchers to shape and execute a broad communications strategy for the Williams Institute, which will include writing and distributing press releases, advisories, and other documents for print, broadcast, and social media; managing and developing media relations to identify and create opportunities for dissemination of Institute research; and responding to inquiries from press. The Communications Manager will also oversee design and creation of content for the Williams Institute's webpage and social media, as well as drafting, design, and copyediting of Williams Institute publications, grant proposals, and grant reports. The position is central to promoting the activities and accomplishments of the Williams Institute to target audiences and the general public in collaboration with the Executive Director, Senior Scholars, and program faculty.

- Minimum of 3-5 years professional public relations or media management experience.
- Excellent journalistic news writing skills and advanced familiarity with AP journalistic style standards.
- Familiarity with media monitoring/Cision a plus.
- Style consistent with professional writing and editing standards.
- Ability to manage and maintain positive and proactive relationships with UCLA Law School faculty, directors, donors and community partners in coordination of press initiatives.
- Advanced knowledge of computers, research databases, and computer software necessary to perform communications responsibilities.
- Advanced ability to initiate activities independently and organize, prioritize and complete work in a timely manner despite deadlines and competing requests. Strong time management skills.
- Highly responsible, sound professional judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality and discern priorities.
- Occasional evening/weekend hours and accessibility.
- Superior editing, proofreading skills and attention to detail.
