Saybrook University is seeking Adjunct Faculty to join its Department of Transformative Social Change.

Under the direction of the Transformative Social Change (TSC) Program Director and Social Impact Media (SIM) Specialization Lead, the Adjunct Faculty members will be responsible, respectively, for the development of final syllabi and online course shells for the following TSC Social Impact Media Specialization courses: TSC 6535 Social Media and Theories of Social Change; TSC 6540 Impact Analysis: Developing the Tools for Impact; and TSC 6545 Feature-Length Documentaries and Outreach Campaigns. In addition, it is intended that the adjunct faculty member will be responsible for teaching the course when it is offered.

Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop syllabi and online course shells for the following courses: TSC 6535 Social Media and Theories of Social Change, TSC 6540 Impact Analysis, and TSC 6545 Feature-Length Documentaries and Outreach Campaigns: Developing the Tools for Impact. Different individuals will likely be hired to develop and teach the respective courses, based on their respective backgrounds and expertise. Draft course descriptions are provided below.
  • Syllabi will include: final reading selections for course, including online materials, learning outcomes, course calendar and course assignments.
  • Adjunct teaching online including assigning reading and work to be submitted, ongoing instruction and feedback to students, and final course evaluations. It is intended that each course developer will be invited to teach the respective course they develop.

Position Requirements:
  • Weekly reporting of progress to SIM Specialization Lead during the course development phase.
  • Monthly meeting with TSC Program Director during the course development phase.
  • Final delivery of syllabus and online course shell: April 30, 2017
  • Teaching of course online (see position responsibilities above; further details of faculty expectations will be provided upon inquiry)

Position Qualifications:
  • Expertise in the field of Social Media and Social Change
  • Graduate degree in related field, e.g., MFA, Ph.D.
  • Prior teaching experience in media studies, communication, journalism, social sciences, and/or advocacy.
  • Prior online teaching experience preferred.

Course Descriptions
  • TSC 6535 Social Media and Theories of Social Change: The goal of this course is develop the student's critical analysis skills as applied to the impact of social communications on social change globally. Students will examine particular social movements and their development as intersected by social media. Issues of truth, accuracy and empathy will be explored in the process of deconstructing assumptions regarding social media and its influence on groups and its ability to trigger social change.
  • TSC 6540 Impact Analysis: Developing the Tools for Impact: The aim of this course is to empower students to critically evaluate research tools of socio and behavioral measurement, and to apply these toolsets and technologies to the analysis of specific impact outreach campaigns. Through coursework students will develop the ability to differentiate the tools of impact analysis, compare quantitative vs. qualitative techniques, and apply their strategies to real-world outreach campaigns.
  • TSC 6545 Feature-Length Documentaries and Outreach Campaigns: The aim of this course is to empower students to see themselves as impact producers, developing and managing outreach campaigns. At the completion of the course students will be able to discern strong personal narrative forms and connect these stories to the larger narrative purpose of outreach and impact.
