Under the leadership of the Assistant Director, New Student Seminar adjunct instructors
may teach a maximum of six sections of this one-credit General Education requirement to
first-year students at the University. The course curriculum includes: study strategies,
time & money management, critical thinking, civility & diversity, wellness & balance,
appreciation for the liberal arts, career development, goal setting & motivation, learning
styles, interpersonal relations, and campus resources. A critical part of the course is the
instruction of policies and procedures as they relate to the University's degree requirements
and issues related to the Student Code of Conduct. The New Student Seminar adjunct
instructor will serve as a resource to first-year students and participate in instructor
training, as well as other departmental initiatives that are implemented through the
course (i.e., attendance monitoring, course evaluation, and training).
Qualifications & Requirements
• Masters degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field
• Previous college-level teaching experience
• Commitment to creating a structured student-centered learning environment
• Demonstrated knowledge of first-year transition issues
• Ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff
• Daytime availability is required
• Experience using a Learning Management System such as Canvas or Blackboard
Adjunct compensation rate is $1,300 per semester hour for Adjuncts who have taught 1 to
15 semesters at Montclair State; $1,350 per semester hour for Adjuncts who have taught
16 or more semesters at MSU.
