Job Description

Our client an Independent School in Los Angles is in search of a Controller

Job Summary: Controller assumes managerial responsibility for the financial operations of the school and oversees the physical plant management. The Controller is also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the school and ensuring that all financial and operations functions meet the needs of the School and its constituencies and for budgeting as well as contract oversight and audit procedures.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Directs and performs duties and tasks, as needed, associated with all aspects of finance, including: financial accounting and controls, budgeting, analysis and reporting, insurance, negotiation and financial management of contracts, and general administration

• Responsible for the timely preparation and distribution of all financial reports, and for ensuring that the school is in full compliance with all legal requirements

• Collaborates with the Head of School and division administrators to ensure that programs remain on budget and are scaled to financial means

• As an Officer of the Corporation, serves as the financial and administrative advisor to the Head of School and provides appropriate access to the school's financial information to the Board of Trustees through the Head of School and the Chair of the Finance Committee

Business Operations:

• Accounts for funds entrusted to the school; maintains current, accurate financial records of the operations and the financial position of the school

• Provides all financial information necessary for current operations, assessments and future planning; analyzes the costs of all school departments

• Prepares, implements and manages annual operating and capital budgets

• Manages cash effectively; maintains an internal control structure

• Oversees the administration of the financial aid process and serves as a member of the financial aid committee

• Partners with the Admissions Office in enrollment management and in the development of financial aid strategies

• Partners with the Advancement Office in the establishment and maintenance of practice to enhance the work of the office

• Works with personnel who handle accounts payable, tuition receivables, banking, payroll and benefits programs, and facilities

• Serves on the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees and works closely with that group on fiscal management, financial analysis, short and long term projections, major expenditures, and financial planning

• Reports and meets with the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees

• Serves on the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees

• Negotiates school health benefit programs, outsourced facilities, long term equipment rentals, utilities providers, sports field partners, and construction agreements

Campus Safety and Plant Management:

• Assumes leadership, with others, in campus safety and risk management efforts

• Assumes oversight responsibilities for plant management through supervision of the Facilities Manager

• Coordinates with the Facilities Managers on any repairs, additions and improvements to the physical plant; oversees all building projects, work of contractors and planners in conjunction with the Facilities Manager

Other Responsibilities:

• Connects with students and participates in the life of the community through a number of ways that may occur during the school year and summertime operations.

• Fosters professional standards and development by participating in local and national organizations such as CAL-ISBOA and NBOA

• Prepares and submits statistical information for annual surveys conducted by CAL-ISBOA and NAIS

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
• Big 4 or other Public Accounting Experience
• CPA plus
• Operate standard office equipment
• Proficient in Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, Access & PowerPoint
• Knowledge of US GAAP accounting

Industry Experience- Education, Elementary or Secondary plus
