Facilities Management at the University of Colorado Boulder has an opening for a Plant Operator in the Utilities Generation and Distribution unit. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who would like to play a role in updating our campus utility systems. The Plant Operator position will be part of a team that operates the District Energy Plant (DEP) and Satellite Plant systems for heating, cooling, and power generation at an advanced level. This person will oversee and operate the Utility Distribution (DIST) Systems, monitor equipment and maintain records of equipment operational status for turnover reports to the Lead Operator, and train lower level Plant Operator positions and new employees.

The incumbent must have electrical generating power plant operations experience or related education/training in power operation. The ideal candidate will be able to problem solve and think independently, exercise reliability, and possess excellent communication skills. This is a full-time, year-round position with benefits.

Who we are:

Within Facilities Management, this position is located in the Operations department of the Power House and is responsible for the operation of Power House systems and equipment. The Power House is a co-generation facility consisting of two Combustion Turbine Generators and associated Heat Recovery Steam Generators, a condensing Steam Turbine Generator, High Voltage Switchgear, Conventional Boilers, Centrifugal Chillers, and associated equipment.

The operations group operates the main heating plant on the CU campus which includes 2 - 1500 ton Centrifugal chillers, 2 - 16 MW Mitsubishi combustion turbine generators, 2 - heat recovery steam generators (80,000 lbs/hr each), 2 - dual fuel fired saturated steam boilers (~100,000 lb/hr each), and all associated equipment.

What your key responsibilities will be:

Operating Heating, Cooling, and Power Generation Equipment:

Operate and configure plant equipment at multiple sites to maintain utilities supplied to the campus in a safe, reliable and efficient manner by complying with procedures, policies, accepted engineering practices, and plant equipment and operating methods. Plan, problem-solve, and take corrective actions for off-normal conditions that could jeopardize equipment, supplied utilities, or the health and safety of personnel or campus assets. District Energy and Satellite Plant Systems to operate include: Combined Heat & Power (CHP) system (aka cogeneration system) consisting of dual fuel combustion gas turbine generators (CTG), Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), Steam Turbine Generator (STG), dual fuel boilers, electric driven centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, and all related auxiliary equipment.

Monitoring and Making Adjustments to Plant Equipment and Processes:

Conduct routine inspections and log equipment parameters at multiple sites to ensure the plant systems are being operated properly. Perform chemical analysis (including adding chemicals to water used in the heating, cooling, and power generation systems) and make adjustments. Oversee operation of DIST systems including load management of university 15kV MicroGrid, Chilled Water (CHW) loop, and Steam Distribution system.

Maintaining and Repairing Equipment and Plant Safety and Security:

Perform troubleshooting and initial Root Cause Analysis (RCA) of equipment failures and operational upsets. Complete minor repairs and preventative maintenance. Control physical access in and around the plant. Monitor process and supervisory control network activity.

This is an essential services position. The incumbent is required to respond after hours during emergencies and report to work for regular assigned shift during emergency campus closures. This position includes shift work which requires working evenings, weekends, holidays and high-volume overtime schedules, and is subject to the on-call policy.

Qualifications

What we require:
  • Must be available for call-in rotation assignment.
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in District Energy or Central Plant steam and chilled water operations.
  • At least one year must have been hands-on experience with any two of the following: (1) electrical generation (2) electrical distribution (3) steam generation (4) steam distribution (5) chilled water generation (6) chilled water distribution (7) Distributed Control Systems such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).

Substitution: Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or higher level course work from an accredited, non-correspondence, vocational or trades school in Utility Plant Operation may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Demonstrated proficiency on position competencies may substitute for the required experience/education.

  • Candidate must successfully pass the CU-Boulder "Boiler & Chiller Operator Training Program" to become Control Room Board Qualified within one (1) year of hire date.

What we'd like you to have:
  • Experience operating Combustion Gas Turbines, HRSGs, electric chillers and steam boilers.
  • Experience with operating high voltage distribution switchgear.
  • Experience with operating Chilled Water distribution systems.
  • Qualified DCS operator.
  • Qualified boiler operator.
  • Some formal education in Power Plant operations/maintenance.

Preferred qualifications may be used to further reduce the pool of applicants to those who are most highly qualified.
