The Department of Instruction and Teacher Education at the University of South Carolina is seeking applications for two (2) full-time (9-month) tenure-track, open-rank positions in language and literacy education to begin August 16, 2017. Exceptional candidates at the rank of professor may be eligible for the Swearingen Chair of Education. The goal of this Professorship is to recognize an individual's teaching, research, and public service accomplishments; and to provide significant resources for planned future pursuits that are fully aligned with the vision and core values of the College.
The Language and Literacy program at the University of South Carolina maintains a national reputation as a leader in developing literacy professionals who are prepared to teach diverse populations. The M.Ed. in Language and Literacy includes coursework that leads to the South Carolina Literacy Teacher certification and an option for completing the South Carolina Literacy Coach certification. The Ph.D. in Language and Literacy includes coursework in socio-cultural and critical approaches to literacy theory and practice. We seek colleagues whose expertise and research is devoted to understanding and improving literacy instruction in congruence with our program. For one position, we seek a colleague with expertise in early literacy instruction and assessment.
The successful applicant will join a team of collaborative faculty serving the nationally recognized Language and Literacy program and will be expected to (1) teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the language and literacy programs; (2) hold a strong record of research and publication; (3) demonstrate experience securing external funding for research and service projects; (4) advise students enrolled in the Language and Literacy and M.Ed. and Ph.D. programs; and (5) provide service to the department, institution, schools, and profession.

Applicants must have: (1) an earned doctorate in literacy education or a closely related field; (2) at least three years of teaching literacy in P-12 settings; (3) evidence of effective college teaching, preferably with pre and/or in-service teachers; and (4) an established record of scholarly productivity, including published articles, presentations, and/or success in securing external funding.
Preference will be given to applicants who possess (1) experience and commitment to working with diverse populations and communities; (2) experience with field-based pedagogy in teacher education; and/or (3) a national reputation, commensurate with rank and experience.
