Summary of Duties
Utah Valley University (UVU) seeks a dynamic leader to serve as the Senior Director for its Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL). The Senior Director will join a seasoned group of instructional professionals, committed staff and faculty in creating and supporting initiatives to enhance learning experiences for all students by supporting faculty excellence and innovation in teaching. The Senior Director will foster university initiatives related to flexible delivery methods and other technological innovations that will position UVU to accommodate expected growth, support its increasing non-traditional student population, and establish itself as an innovator in higher education. Additionally, the Senior Director will enhance, support, and firmly establish UVU nationally as a teaching institution with a globally accredited, prestigious, and credentialed faculty development program that awards fellowships from the Higher Education Academy in the U.K., the first institution of higher education in the U.S. to do so. The position requires an individual who has a strong vision for a faculty-driven approach to enhancing teaching and learning and the ability to collaborate across institutional constituents to advance the unique educational mission of the university.
Senior Director, Office of Teaching and Learning
The Senior Director of the Office of Teaching and Learning works collaboratively with academic leaders, faculty, and staff to create and deliver innovative, high quality flexible learning (online/hybrid) and face-to-face courses and programs that promote academic excellence, enhance student learning, increase access, and support degree completion. The Senior Director is responsible for providing support, resources, programming, and training to develop faculty pedagogical skills, including but not limited to technology-enhanced instructional methods, instructional design, and engaged and inclusive learning approaches. The Senior Director reports to the Associate Vice President of Academic Programs.
Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with a doctoral degree in an academic discipline, education technology, distance education, adult learning, higher education, or a related field. Rank of Associate Professor or Professor with a history of successful advancement through a faculty evaluation or promotion system OR extensive relevant leadership experience in the area of instructional design/instructional pedagogies combined with extensive higher education teaching experience, preferably full-time. Progressive responsibility in the design, development, delivery, and marketing of technology-enhanced delivery of higher education programs; related experience in leading and managing faculty development activities; and strategic leadership, management, and planning expertise.
Knowledge and strong leadership experience and demonstrated effectiveness in working collaboratively with academic administrators and faculty to create credibility and trust, and encourage initiative and innovation in online education and faculty development.
Knowledge of nationally-recognized processes for quality assurance for online education and student learning.
Knowledge and experience with state and national standards and requirements for distance learning.
Excellent listening, inquiry, and follow-up skills; willingness to learn about and embrace different viewpoints and perspectives.
Outstanding oral presentation and written communication skills across various audiences.
Patience and ability to mediate differences.
Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders (students, faculty, staff, administrators).
Demonstrated ability in the effective pedagogical uses of emerging technologies,
Ability to embed appropriate forms of instructional technology into teaching contexts to support student learning.
Demonstrated ability and capacity to collaborate across organizational units to create programs, maximize resources, and enhance the work of faculty.
Clear record of successful strategic and operational leadership; ability to inspire and influence others to support a comprehensive mission/vision; clear evidence of the ability to implement and manage change.
Demonstrated ability to implement new processes, procedures, and standards.
Proven ability to creatively and entrepreneurially seize distance learning opportunities.
